It’s no secret that I love cats and when I see that cats and people can help each other it makes my heart happy. I have shared before that I am volunteering at the Pisgah Paws Cat Cafe and Emporium located at 190 N. Broad St. in Brevard, NC. It has become my Tuesday morning “job” and if you ever need me then that is where I will most likely be. It is a great place to volunteer and I am thrilled to be able to do a little bit to help them out.
Volunteering takes many forms but my basic job when i visit on Tuesday is to make sure the room where the cats hang out is clean and that they have plenty of food and water. There is always another volunteer with me and recently we have had some more fabulous helpers from Transylvania Vocational Services. This organization has been around for over 50 years and their motto on their website is as follows:
Committed to offering meaningful employment and engagement for adults with disabilities and barriers to employmentTransylvania Vocational Services
How wonderful is that? If you know me at all you know that this is a perfect fit for me. I absolutely love having these folks come in when I am volunteering. The normal crew is 3 adults and their supervisor and they have become quite a big help to us. They help make sure the cats have food and water, help with litter boxes, sweep and wipe down tables and chairs, empty trash, stack supplies and anything else that we can find for them to do. When the work is done they have plenty of time to play with the kitties and that is most likely their favorite part.
The cat cafe has been a great thing for our community in a lot of ways. So many adoptions have been made, so many cats have found wonderful homes and so many people have come together to help this cafe be successful. Founder Erica Erikson has more energy and drive to rescue animals than anyone I know. She has the biggest heart and I am amazed at how she has taken on such a big job in addition to her full time job as an attorney.
Not only does the cat cafe have cats to adopt there is also an endless amount of merchandise that can be purchased. One area features books and gently used donated items while the majority of the cafe is filled with other great new merchandise that can be purchased. If it is cat related you can probably find it here so it is a great place to shop for gifts and for things for the cat in your life. From cat carriers and toys to coffee, chocolates, greeting cards and jewelry it is here. All money raised helps to fund the rescue efforts.
If you are ever in the area make sure you check out my favorite spot to volunteer. The Pisgah Paws Cat Cafe and Emporium is open Fridays from 4 until 10 pm, Saturdays from 11 am until 7 pm and Sundays from 11 am until 6 pm. Of course if you want to go any other time to check out adopting a kitty just contact them and they will be happy to make an appointment to meet with you. Just check out all of their contact info on their Facebook page here.
