Comments for a Cause – Food for All

4 Comments/ 206/ 0

November is upon us and that means the first of the month post for Comments for a Cause. Some day maybe I will make a list of all the causes we have highlighted on It’s Just Life but that would be a loooonnngggg post since I have been doing it since April 2011. The very first cause I highlighted was the Parkinson’s Foundation in my dad’s memory. If you have been with me for awhile, which many of you have, you know that the idea of doing this highlight every month came from following another blogger who did a similar thing. It has been fun to explore new charities and be able to introduce my readers to new organizations that are doing good work.

In October, since it was Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I highlighted Cyversity as our nonprofit to support. Their mission:

To achieve the consistent representation of women, underrepresented communities, and all veterans in the cybersecurity industry through programs designed to diversify, educate, and empower.

What a great mission, right? It is a great goal and one that I can totally support as can many others. Their charity rating and mission made me want to explore their work a little bit more and I was happy to be able to give them a little plug here on the blog. This month Chris and I will be making a small donation thanks to the comments made here on the blog during the month. Thanks to all who have contributed by commenting.

If you know me at all, you know that I have a heart for organizations that help people in times of crisis and my favorite local nonprofit is Sharing House. I volunteer at Sharing House and serve on the Board of Directors so you can understand that my heart is with this organization. Their ability to see the need and serve neighbors with a unique choice based experience is one of the truly great models of crisis assistance. Add in all of the empowerment programs, Back to School program and my all time favorite Christmas Blessings where I am part of the Elf Team, and it is a place that is close to my heart.

With the government shut down (as of this writing) and continued elimination of important funding for food related programs like SNAP, it seemed like the perfect month to highlight Sharing House as our Comments for a Cause recipient again. We expect to see an increase in need for the basic food items during this time and realize that the needs will be escalating as it is more difficult for families to put food on the table. The needs are real and while my pantry and freezer may be filled, many others are not. So this month I will support Sharing House and their efforts to make food available for their neighbors.

You know the drill. Read a post. Leave a comment. At the end of the month we total it all up and Chris and I will make a donation to Sharing House. I realize some of you have had a problem leaving comments with Disqus and I am not sure why but hang in there and one day maybe it will work for you. I had issues with other comment applications as well so that’s why I changed to this one. Anyway, it’s all good and even if you don’t comment, read and I will pad the numbers a bit.

.

Many of you support your local food banks and many Little Free Pantries have popped up. I encourage you to support those as well. Small donations are important during this time of need and it is always appreciated. Thank you for doing what you can in your community. It makes a difference.
