A Community that Cares

9 Comments/ 481/ 0

I live in a very caring community. My immediate neighborhood of Connestee Falls is amazing and always the first folks to pitch in when there is a need. Our larger community of Brevard is a close knit thriving community with more non profits than you can shake a fist at. What does that phrase really mean? But recently, a new push towards compassion and care has resurfaced and I am happy to be a very small part of it.

TC STRONG is a broad coalition of youth, school, and community leaders working together to ensure that every youth in Transylvania County feels confident and secure in connection, purpose, and hope. They have a great mission and have been available to our community through some pretty tough times.

This past week we had another youth die by suicide. It is devastating to those that loved this child and to all who feel the ripples of sadness as a result. While I did not know the student, I know others who did, and it is devastating. To realize that this youth felt there was no other option is sobering.

So this fabulous group, TC Strong, mobilized a card writing effort. An attempt to add a layer of support and love and compassion to those in our schools who may just need to feel a little bit of extra love right now.

.

Totes with cards to use were set up in 3 easy to access locations within the county and folks could grab a stack of cards and write notes of encouragement and compassion to the students. Of course I had to jump on board and even though my little notes were not fancy or complicated, hopefully they will bring a smile to the faces of the students who receive them.

In a world where there is so much pressure on everyone, especially our youth, it is important to be aware of those who just are at risk. In the past year a new lifeline to those struggling has been activated and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has been in place. By simply dialing 988 an individual can be connected with a crisis counselor who can offer emotional support and direct the caller to resources. What a gift this must be to those who are struggling.

If you know someone who is struggling, please reach out and direct them to the resources that can help. 988 is a great place to start. Thank you to TCStrong for being there for our kids.

Old Girls in Low Cotton
