A Quick Look at Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area – Caesars Head – Jones Gap

14 Comments/ 763/ 0

We live is such a great area for hiking and nature walks. Chris and I finally took time to go explore Caesars Head State Park in South Carolina. We live so close to the South Carolina border that it is easy to access this park and one that we plan to start exploring. It is a mere 9 miles to the Visitor’s Center from our house so we checked that out today and enjoyed some of the views before we started a hike.

A view from the Caesars Head Overlook
I didn’t know what we would find!
Very steep stairs and a skinny place to get through the rocks.

The name makes you wonder, doesn’t it? The myth about the name comes back from the days when the the Scots-Irish who settled the area and who enjoyed brewing their own alcohol. The story goes that the Devil himself made a hot brew and spilled a drop of it on the rock and caused the rock to split open on the spot.

We decided to take one of the shorter hikes that was accessible from the Visitor’s Center. It was kind of one of those spur of the moment things and we may not have been totally prepared for the hike but we managed to get a 2. 2 mile hike in and lived to tell the tale. It was a really pretty hike and we even saw several little waterfalls which is always a bonus. Here are some pictures from that hike.

Isn’t nature wonderful? Even when it is winter and there is not a lot of color around I am still able to find things that are beautiful. Thank you, God.

Waterfall with a little cave.
We found the top of another waterfall that was really pretty.
The elevation change was pretty dramatic – we figured it was about equal to walking up
40 stories so no wonder we were a little bit tired at the end.
Another little water area.
This is a VERY good idea to leave a note with all your information before you hike.

We decided to just go ahead and get a Park Passport for $99 which will allow us access to all South Carolina State Parks with unlimited access for everyone in the vehicle. There are some other perks that come with the passport so we are anxious to take advantage of those. Included is entrance to the Hunting Island Lighthouse which we saw but did not go up in when we visited Hunting Island.

I hope you will come back on Saturday to read who the next Comments for a Cause recipient will be. Please feel free to leave a comment for our current Comments for a Cause – Project: Music Heals Us.
