One of our favorite things to seek out on beach themed vacations are lighthouses. They are one of my favorite things and I have visited more lighthouses over the years in various places than I can even remember. Our recent trip to Virginia was filled with lighthouse discoveries and this was one of the best.

Located in Assateague Island National Seashore this one was a quick walk down a nice easily accessible trail.

A somewhat cloudy and overcast day with spots of sunshine and our trek to the lighthouse was successful.

The Assateague Lighthouse is located on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island. The Coast Guard has maintained the lighthouse for many years. Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred to the Fish & Wildlife Service from the Coast Guard in 2004. While the U.S. Coast guard still maintains the light as an active navigational aid, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is responsible for preserving the lighthouse. The top of the lighthouse is accessible to the public but was not open when we visited. It is still operational and one of the most impressive landmarks in Virginia.

Behind the lighthouse we found this poignant marble marker.
