Comments for a Cause – A Roof Over Their Heads

22 Comments/ 744/ 0

Happy November to all. Wow. The year is almost over and it has been a wild ride in some ways but yet – here we are. Still here and I am still happily sharing Comments for a Cause on It’s Just Life.

October was another cause that was one of my mom’s favorite charities to support. This time I selected the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. My mom found many ways to support Parkinson’s research after Daddy passed away from complications from it in 1994. I did a little digging and found out that this foundation is one that is really wonderful in getting research done and also is rated highly on Charity Navigator which is important.

Currently we know several people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and it is one of those diseases that affects folks differently. Different treatments also help people in different ways but oh what a wonderful world it will be when we can say that we have a cure for this debilitating disease. But for now, I will happily announce that thanks to your continued comments on the blog Chris and I will be making a donation of $125 to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Thank you!

Another place that my mom loved to support was Habitat for Humanity. While she supported locally and nationally I decided that I would support our local Transylvania County Habitat for Humanity in her memory. I think she would like that.

The mission of Habitat is very simple.

Eliminating poverty housing in our beautiful county to assure that every family has a decent, safe place to call home.

Everyone deserves to have a decent and safe place to live but unfortunately that is not the case. In our county there are people that actually live in the forest. Children get picked up for school in the forest. They don’t have a normal roof over their heads. That is pitiful, in my humble opinion, and needs to change. Habitat is one of those organizations that is making great strides in helping families become home owners.

The houses are not just given to the families/individuals. They have a very important part in the whole process and are expected to put in sweat equity along with other community volunteers. Not only does this help keep costs low, it also helps instill a sense of pride and ownership as they build their home. It is definitely a win win in every sense.

Currently Transylvania Habitat for Humanity has 3 homes under construction with 7 additional lots available. That is a wonderful way to help 10 families have safe and affordable housing in our county.

During November please leave me a comment on all of the blog posts you can. For every comment left during November Chris and I will make a donation of 50 cents to Transylvania Habitat for Humanity. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help support another wonderful cause.
