Comments for a Cause – July 2022 Edition

18 Comments/ 1282/ 0

July brings forth fireworks. BBQ’s and celebrations and summer kicks into full gear for most of us. I feel like my June just vanished without me even realizing it but here we go – full force into July and all of the fun things that are on the horizon.

This past month our Comments for a Cause focused on a serious charity – Uvalde Victims Relief Fund which will ensure that all donated monies go to the many victims of the horrific event that happened in Uvalde, Texas. The Uvalde Victims Relief Fund will be used to support the families while their loved ones are at University Hospital following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022. These donations will be used to cover any unpaid medical expenses, lodging, food and other needs identified by our social workers. Any unspent funds after they are discharged from the hospital will be donated to Uvalde charities involved in the ongoing relief efforts. Any excess donations will be distributed within Uvalde to charities that are assisting in the recovery efforts.

Thanks to your generosity and continued comments here on It’s Just Life, Chris and I will be making a donation of $112 to the Uvalde Victims Relief Fund to help with their efforts. Thank you.

We live in the land of white squirrels. I have shared many pictures over our years of living in Brevard of our little furry friends who populate our area. They are one of the fun things about living here. the white squirrel variety that we have here are not albino. How did they get here? According to online sources a pair were trapped in Florida and brought to Brevard as captive pets in the late 1940’s. They were then released sometime in the 1950’s. They had the same markings (head patch and dorsal stripe) that distinguish the Brevard white squirrels that are in the area today. There is of course some folklore about how the original squirrels got here but however they got here — we all adore them.

Fortunately the locals love the white squirrels and devote a lot of attention and care for them. The White Squirrel Institute has a mission to preserve and protect the white squirrel. The White Squirrel Institute was started by Robert Glesner in 1997. He was an Associate Professor of Biology, Emeritus, Brevard College. B.S., University of Maryland (Zoology); M.S. (Zoology) and Ph.D. (Biological Sciences), University of Michigan. A yearly white squirrel count is conducted in the fall and of course the animal is featured in the yearly White Squirrel Festival. They are just a fun thing to be able to spot when you are in Brevard and Transylvania County.

I am happy to announce that our Comments for a Cause recipient this month will be The White Squirrel Institute for the conservation and preservation of our beloved white squirrel. For every comment made on any post during the month Chris and I will donate 50 cents to the institute for their continued efforts. Please check out their website and social media links below for all the information that you might want to know about our furry friends. There is a wonderful FAQ section on the website which will answer all your questions. Thanks in advance for your support and your comments.
