Our trip to Nova Scotia included a lot of really fun excursions and the first part of our trip without the rest of the family was spent in Cape Breton area. It was stunningly beautiful and probably one of my favorite Canadian places now.
We stayed at a cute bed and breakfast Auberge Doucet Inn in Cheticamp and stayed there 4 nights. It was a great place to use as base as we went and explored the area.

We watched some really pretty sunsets from the Adirondack chairs in the front.
.
We took off the first full day there and did some exploring . It’s always fun to drive around in new places and see all the hidden gems and that is exactly what we did. We found some beaches and wharfs and just enjoyed the beautiful day.

Boardwalk Beach in Port Hood was a lovely walk through the dunes and it was a gorgeous day so we walked on the beach a bit.

We made the journey to an out of the way lighthouse – Mabou Harbour Lighthouse. It was on a wharf with some fishing and lobster boats but there was absolutely no one there when we were there.

The Mabou Lighthouse is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values. It is a place that is important because this area was used for fishermen and gypsum mining. There were two range lights erected in 1884 at the entrance to Marbou Harbour and they were important to the area. The lighthouses suffered damage over the years and and repairs were made. The wooden tower which was rebuilt in 1908 was dedicated in 2006 as a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its architectural value. It was fun to see the lighthouse and be able to walk around the wharf without anyone else there. One of those special days that we will remember.
