Happy Birthday, Dad!

Skip Chiles (December 2008)

I know it is not the 5th in the US yet but it is here so I wanted to wish my fantastic father in law a happy birthday!!!! I know that I am blessed beyond belief but I have been really really blessed with my inlaws! Just so you all know I think I have the best father in law that anyone could ever have! He has always made me feel right at home, one of the family and has supported me in ways that even he does not know. I think as one gets older (and I am advancing in age too!) you kind of start to take stock of your life and reflect upon those people in your life that have made a difference. My own parents of course led the way but my father in law has also been a huge influence on me. Here he is—cancer survivor—has had more operations and major things happen to him (including an airplane crash when he was in the Air Force)than anyone should ever have and he still plugs on. To the point where HE is the caretaker for many of his friends. He has a true servant heart and I can only hope that he realizes how special he is. I know that there are many days that he just does not feel good or like doing much at all but he continues to do for others and support his friends and family in whatever way he can. So here’s to you, Dad! Hope your day is a great one filled with all the happiness that you deserve. And need I mention that he is now taking care of our kitties—Buddy and Holly??? Now THAT was a blessing! He volunteered to take them when we decided to come to Australia and I don’t think they could have a better home! So, Dad, thank you and God Bless You for all that you are and all that you mean to me!!! I love you!

Old Girls in Low Cotton

This short book was one that looked like it would be a fun read. I honestly did not enjoy it all that much---it was a lot of characters bickering and while some of the writing was witty and funny it was not that kind of book that made m...

I loved this book! It had my interest from the very first page and was my "airplane" book on a recent trip. Author Mary Kubica created believable and interesting characters that the reader learned to identify with and care about. Mi...

All the Light We Cannot See

This is quite a book! I had it recommended to me by several people and while I thought it might be a little dark and depressing it made me have a better understanding of what life in this time period was like. The strength of the huma...

An Abundance of Katherines

Another great book by John Green. I have become a huge fan of John Green since my reading of A Fault in our Stars and this book was another that did not disappoint me at all. It was a story of a child prodigy, a lot of anagrams, and a b...
