Every year on April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day. While I don’t always do everything that is helpful to the earth, I do try to do my part when I can. In church yesterday it was mentioned that one family in our area is going zero waste to the point of reducing their trash to one garbage bag a year. ONE GARBAGE BAG A YEAR! That deserves capitals and exclamation marks. That is an admirable goal but I don’t think I would ever be able to achieve that.
Growing up we always recycled things and repurposed things. My mom used the inside liners of cereal boxes to use to put cooling cookies on. We passed outgrown clothes along to those who could use them and I was the recipient of my older sister’s clothes so guess what? I got to wear some outfits twice when we had matching outfits for special occasions. We composted for the garden. We used colored comics for wrapping paper. We used brown paper bags for book covers for school text books. You get the idea.
As time has gone on I have not done quite as great of a job of reducing waste but I do try. We recycle everything that we can and sometimes feed veggie and fruit scraps to our animal friends. We try to buy things that are energy efficient and recyclable. I am a work in progress with this but I do try.
Having several biologists in my immediate family helps keep me tuned into the environment and our role as humans in the preservation of it. That is a good goal for all of us, don’t you think? Some things that all of us can try to do to help our earth include:
Keeping litter picked up
Support recycling efforts
Support “green” businesses
Carpool or coordinate trips
Use multi use items instead of disposable
Shop at thrift and second hand stores and donate your gently used items for reuse
There’s always something that we can do. Even if it is a small thing those small things add up and help to preserve the earth that we call home. Tell me, what do you plan to do for YOUR earth today? Leave me a comment and Comment for a Cause for Pretty Place.
