I know I have probably ranted and raved about not being able to have pretty flowers here in Connestee Falls. This is most likely time 535. It’s unfortunately true.
We have rabbits. We have raccoons. We have bears. We have squirrels and chipmunks.
But most importantly – we have deer. Hungry, hungry, hungry deer. Right now they are nursing mamas and they are after every single plant that is available.
I honestly don’t try to keep a lot of plants and flowers growing and when I do plant I try to find ones that are deer resistant. But that does not always turn out to be accurate when our deer population escalates which it is obviously doing now.
I had (operative word) a beautiful portulaca plant with beautiful red blossoms on it. It was in a little planter my sister had given me and was in an out of the way spot by our front porch where deer never go. Until now.
Nibbled down to the dirt. Also gone is all the ground cover in the front that they have previously ignored due to my attentive spraying. Sigh. I sat on the dock a bit the other day and realized that one plant on the dock is totally gone now as well so I guess they did a little bit of their own “Dock Time”.
It’s a fine balance of living in the woods. I have to just accept that this is the way it is and if I don’t keep up with spraying and doing preventative things to keep them away this will happen. But it still made me mad.
Even though those fawns are darn cute.
