It’s Great to Live in the Woods Until It Isn’t

6 Comments/ 16/ 0

I LOVE where we live. I really do. I never thought I would love to live in the mountains as much as I do and when Chris told me over 10 years ago that that was a spot he wanted to move I was a little doubtful. But I do love it. Our house is situated on a little lake and I can see beautiful sunrises from our bed in the morning over the lake. The forest that surrounds us is lovely and the trees provide shade in the summer and are a great habitat for all of our critters.

We try to keep up with keeping trees trimmed and taking ones down that have died (it’s a constant thing) but it does not always mean that we don’t have rogue branches that fall on our driveway during windy times or ice storms which do happen occasionally.

This past week we had horrific winds and while we did not hear the actual event over the wind noise – what happened at the villas next to our house is pretty epic. Fortunately no one was home at the time in any of the six villas, no cars were in the parking lot and there appears to be less damage to the structures than could have been possible.

From what we can tell there are about 9 trees that fell down basically in a straight line from the golf course through to the villas and it looks like something out of a Lord of the Rings or some fantastical movie. It is magical looking if it weren’t so devastating.

The work will soon begin to get rid of the debris but what a spectacle this has been in our neighborhood. Driving by on the main road into our development it is obvious that something has happened and folks have been stopping by to gawk. I can’t blame them.

Elaine, on the left, lives in one of the covered up villas and our friend Wanda stopped by to take some pictures and we all posed in front of the root ball of the largest tree that fell. That will give you an idea of what the size is.

Elaine quoted back to me my mantra – “it’s good to live in the woods until it isn’t.” I guess that really applies to a time like this. Somehow we escaped any damage this time — a lot of little limbs down all over but nothing in comparison to what is at the villas. We are very grateful.
