January was National Volunteer Blood Donor Month (NVBDM). To increase awareness of blood donation the nations leading blood donation organizations, America’s Blood Centers, AABB, and the American Red Cross, have joined together to promote NVBDM. First-time and regular donors are encouraged to make a difference to their communities by scheduling an appointment to give blood this January. Remember, just one pint of blood can help save up to three lives.

I decided to focus on American Red Cross last month as our Comments for a Cause recipient. This charity has a perfect Charity Navigator rating and is the first place that I think of when I think of blood donation. I believe in their vision and in their. mission. They make the donation process really easy and answer all of your potential questions on their website. To find a local blood drive simply click here to plug in your zipcode.
Chris and I are happy to make a small donation this month thanks to your comment here on It’s Just Life. Every little bit helps, just like every little drop of blood helps. Thanks for always supporting our causes with your comments.

It has been incredibly cold here in Western North Carolina and our heat pump has been going non stop. We have been able to supplement that with our gas fireplace and keep our house at a nice toasty temperature as the temperatures have dipped over the past couple of weeks but there is a real need in our community for heating assistance. One of the greatest ministries in our area is the WNC FireWood Ministry that is managed by our church – Brevard First UMC and the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. It is a joint effort (and always seeking more partners) that believes that no one in our area should have to pay for firewood to heat their home. Many local tree companies donate lumber to be used by the ministry and volunteers are responsible for processing and very limited delivery of the wood to eligible recipients. Most of the wood is distributed at the Firewood Lot located in the parking lot of First UMC.
Many of the neighbors at Sharing House, where I volunteer, are recipients of this ministry and it is a vital part of keeping our community warm. I am thrilled that so many are able to keep warm through this ministry. While the wood is donated there is always a need for monetary donations that will help to keep the program running with the purchase of new equipment and other necessary items. Your comments on any post during the month of February means a small 50 cent donation to the WNC FireWood Ministry
Thank you, always, for taking the time to follow along and read and comment here on the blog. I am thrilled to have you as part of my extended family and love hearing from you. I’ll be back at it this week bringing you more from my little corner of the world. Click here to find out more about the WNC FireWood Ministry.
