If you have driven anywhere on the eastern side of the country you probably have seen those signs. Signs that say “See Ruby Falls” or “Rock City”. These two attractions are located in Tennessee and were the main reason for our anniversary trip. You see those signs for enough years and you get pulled into the hype. You really WANT to go see Ruby Falls and Rock City. You feel like life is incomplete until that is checked off your bucket list. I might be exaggerating a tad but you get the idea. We wanted to be tourists and so we were.

Ruby Falls was accidentally discovered by Leo Lambert in 1928. It is nestled in Lookout Mountain and Leo named the falls after his wife, Ruby. It is a pretty fun place to explore and we were able to go down the glass front elevator 260 feet into the cave where we.were led by a tour guide through the cave to the actual waterfall. It was pretty neat to see all of the stalactite and stalagmite formations as well as other types of geological displays.

Some areas were highlighted with lights (hence the colors) and were pretty amazing. The cave was a cool 60 degrees and wet and dark as you can imagine but the paths through were well lit and our group was fairly small so we were able to keep up with the tour guide and hear all the interesting things she shared.
.
Some of the structures resembled different things so they kindly labeled them for us so we could see the similarities. Some of them were rather comical.

As we got closer to the actual falls we could hear it but it was pitch black. Once we got in the area where it was located, the light show began which illuminated the massive falls. It was pretty amazing. I can not imagine what Leo must have thought when he realized the grandeur of what he had discovered.

Of course we had to take a selfie. Because we were there, right?

Ruby Falls is worth the trip in my opinion. We really did enjoy it and we were able to go during the week when it was not crowded. There is a lot to do in the area and you could definitely keep yourself busy with a trip here. Their website here is full of great information and facts about the cave and the falls as well as the history of how it all was discovered and developed.
Have you ever been to Ruby Falls? I would love to hear your impressions so leave me a comment and Comment for a Cause for Sharing House Back to School.
