The Most Fabulous Time of the Year

8 Comments/ 568/ 0

If you ask me, and you didn’t, the best time of the year is when the AAUW Brevard Branch Annual Used Book Sale happens. Hold on to your hats, friends, because the 53rd Annual Book Sale is almost upon us.

This event is the most organized and complete book sale around. 53 years of fine tuning and perfecting have created an almost flawless sale. Volunteers work all year long to collect, price and box up books and the sale usually boasts 30, 000 books. Now that is a lot of books.

The sales from both the annual book sale and our online eBay shop that is open all year long for easy shopping help to fund scholarships for local girls and women. We send girls to STEM camps, leadership camps and events and help fund scholarships for women from our county who are attending Blue Ridge Community College and Brevard College. Both of these institutions have endowments that we have funded over the years as well.

This year the traffic into the Boshamer Gym at Brevard College will be directed in one door and out the back door. It is the first time we have tried this new flow pattern with the cashiers at the back of the gym and I am excited to see how it works. It makes sense to me and I think the layout this year is going to be much better.

We already have the floor covered, tables set up and boxes set up to place the books on the tables for easy viewing. Today, as you read this, I am probably busy at work helping load and unload hundreds of boxes of books. They are transported from our Book Nook to the college gym where they get placed in their appropriate category. It takes a lot of volunteers and honestly, it is really a great event and fun to build community within our group.

Of course it is always hot as blazes in the gym with. no windows for ventilation but that does not stop this determined group.

The first day of the sale always amazes me. People line up outside to be first in the doors to get the best books. But trust me – even on Wednesday, the last day of the sale, there are great books to be found. If you want to keep up with our sale I would love to invite you to follow our Facebook page by clicking here. I will be posting pictures and videos of the sale and you just never know what you might see.

If you live locally I would love to see you. I will be manning the Hold Area most days so stop by and chat me up. I would love to see all my friends.
