To B and B or Not to B and B

2 Comments/ 46/ 0

We have been home a few days from our Alaskan adventure and I am trying very hard to get back into the swing of things. For some reason I am struggling a bit but hey — I blame it on the change in sleep patterns.

Our trip was a combination of stays in hotels and a bed and breakfast and I know I have written before about stays in bed and breakfasts and how sometimes they are great and sometimes not so great. When we travel we really like to do our own thing. That means that sometimes we just don’t want to be with a bunch of people we don’t know. But sometimes we just like the coziness and convenience of a bed and breakfast and it works out great. Our stay in Homer, Alaska was the perfect bed and breakfast and while the location was great, the hosts were the best part of the stay.

Homer Stay and Play was the perfect place for us to use as home base after we flew into Alaska. The property overlooks the Kachemak Bay,  simply majestic mountains and beautiful glaciers. We were lucky enough to spend 3 nights in their Glacier View Suite which was comfortable and spacious. We loved the view from the private deck and I spent time sitting outside, taking in the view with a cuppa and a book. Perfect.

We had all the privacy we needed and our hosts, Anna and Byron, were the real stars of our stay. Every morning they prepared a lovely breakfast for us. We chose from a varied menu and let them know the night before what we wanted and then sat down to a private dining experience with a view of beauty. The fun part was that each morning Anna presented us with two amazing amuse bouche (small bite) prior to our main breakfast where she used local ingredients and flavors that would share a bit of Alaska with us.

Mini Kodiak pancake and a lovely salmon topped sourdough bread bite.

Another lovely mixture of flavors with moose liverwurst on that amazing sourdough bread with a crumble made with fruits from their property. Lovely.

We shared a lot of conversation with Anna and Byron and it was great to get their advice on places to go and things to do even though we had some ideas of our own. It is always fun to get a local perspective and find things that maybe we would not discover on our own. The good thing is that they were fabulous hosts – available when we needed them, accommodating but allowed us our privacy. The perfect bed and breakfast experience.

If you have followed me for very long you know my love of all things googly eyed and when I noticed these on the island, I knew I was in the right place.

If you are looking for a great place to stay and use as home base when you are in Homer, I would highly recommend Homer Stay and Play. Check out their website here.
