Travel From Your Couch – Alaska

4 Comments/ 250/ 0

Our trip to Alaska seems so long ago but I am still reliving the memories of an almost perfect trip. I tell you – if you ever have the chance to to go to Alaska –just do it. It is really a worthwhile trip. The way we did it, on our own, no cruise, no tour groups, suited us perfectly and although there is no way we could have seen all that Alaska has to offer in an 8 day trip, it gave us just the right amount of experiences to satisfy us.

The flowers and plants are enormous. I guess that extra daylight time does make a difference.

One of the things that Alaska is well known for is salmon, of course. Chris actually went fishing a couple of days and while he was fishing for trout he caught a few salmon as well. Salmon fishing has been the lifeblood of Alaska forever and it is something to see.

.

.

One of the things that I was not quite ready for was what happens to all those salmon carcasses. It is the law that once you take the meat off of the fish, you are required to return the carcass to the water. It’s all part of the cycle of life – allowing other fish and creatures to feed off the decaying carcass. It makes sense but I was not quite ready to see a beach littered with salmon remains.

.

.

This one beach we walked on was littered with carcasses because it was prime salmon fishing season. To the natives this is what feeds them all year long and they are allowed to take a huge amount of fish every day. So that means a lot of remains. So many that at this beach there were bulldozers and other machines that were scooping them up and taking them to the water’s edge for the water to take them out. It was a little gross but important. These pictures don’t really show the amount but I didn’t want to gross anyone out too much.

.

.

So what else is there to see and do in Alaska? So many things. So much beauty. I can’t describe it adequately.

.

.

You know I always love to take pictures of shorebirds.

Hope you enjoyed your trip to Alaska from your couch today! Come back next week for more adventures.
