Comments for a Cause – A Favorite Thing

1 Comment/ 1977/ 0

Thanks for popping over to It’s Just Life on the first of the month. If you are a regular here you know that the first of the month brings about my Comments for a Cause. Not only do I let my readers know how many comments were made on the blog during the past month, I also reveal our new recipient for the upcoming month. So many folks pop over on the first and catch up and it makes me so happy to know that you are supporting me with this little endeavor I do each month.

This past month I chose a great cause here in Transylvania County. The Brevard Philharmonic has a great Music in the Schools program and this was what I chose to highlight this past month. Their programs to help expose children and youth to music is one of the the things that I love the most. So often music is a huge part of our lives and introducing children to the many aspects of music early on is truly a gift that will carry them through life. Brevard is a town that is filled with so many rich musical opportunities and it makes me happy to be a very small part of this.

Thanks to the comment here on the blog during the month, Chris and I will be making a donation of $85 to the Brevard Philharmonic for the Music in the Schools program. Thanks to all who stopped by to comment a time or two.

Anyone who knows me knows of my love of books. Chris jokingly refers to my Subaru Outback as the Bookmobile because I always seem to have a box (or two or three) of books that are being transported someplace. It only makes sense that so many of my charitable donations go to book related causes.

During March 2024 I chose the Transylvania County Library Foundation to be the recipient of my Comments for a Cause. The Foundation is a great way to help support our local library in tangible ways. The Board of Directors has designated several areas that are target areas for funding. Taken from the library website, these are the areas that are most needed at this time:

To enhance the collection, preservation, and access to Transylvania County’s Local History Collection. The Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room is a growing repository of family histories and genealogy; photographs, postcards and other images; newspapers, maps and manuscript materials. Your gift helps us to preserve and collect our heritage.

To provide for Children’s Special Events on a regular basis. This fund exists to bring high-quality literary and artistic experiences, such as renowned children’s authors, storytellers and other artists to the children of Transylvania County each year.

To fund Adult Speakers / Public Forums. The J.R. McDowell Speaker Series is designed to present a wide array of viewpoints on challenging and thought-provoking topics. The series is named for Trustee Emeritus the Rev. J.R. McDowell and has brought speakers such as Calvin Trillin, Ann Patchett and Doris Kearns Goodwin to Transylvania County.

To provide an Opportunity Fund.  This fund allows our Library to explore new technologies in library services “off budget”. Gifts to this fund established our collection of Playaways and have funded web development for our library.

The Elizabeth R. Kapp Tyson Professional Development Fund. Established from a gift of the estate of our long-time Library Director Elizabeth Kapp Tyson, its purpose is to enhance the continuing education and career development opportunities for the Library Staff.

I love our library and all that it offers to our county residents. Libraries have always been a part of my life. They do far more than offer books to check out and it is my hope that you will come back to It’s Just Life often this month to read and comment and support my local library in this way. For each comment made on any post during the month,, Chris and I will make a 50 cent donation to the Foundation. As always, thank you in advance for continuing to support our mission with your comments.
