Comments for a Cause – Fresh and Local

8 Comments/ 1865/ 0

June is here and it is always my pleasure to share at the first of the month the results of our Comments for a Cause and reveal the next recipient for the current month. This has been a project of mine since April of 2011, can you believe? I found the idea on a fellow blogger’s site and thought it was brilliant. Although my readership is not huge these days (or at least the comments), I still think it is a great way to highlight new causes and garner some support for them. So here we go!

May went by so quickly and it was the month to highlight Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI). Chris and I had the privilege of attending one of their open houses and we loved seeing what they are able to do at the facility. Camps and other events help to educate and promote everything related to science and it is one of the favorite places in the area to visit. We had such a great time when we were there and barely scratched the surface of what they have on site. The summer camps and school programs have to be amazing for students and I am thrilled that we have something of this caliber in our area.

Chris and I are happy to announce that we will be making a donation of $75 to PARI as a result of our Comments for a Cause program here in It’s Just Life. Thanks to all who have taken the time to read and comment.

One of my favorite weekend things to do is to visit our local Farmers Market. The Transylvania Farmers Market is thriving and it is a place to go to find produce and more. Their website states the following:

We are a not-for-profit organization that supports local food, farms, and small businesses that make, grow, or produce their products within 100 miles of Brevard, North Carolina. Our vendors gather each Saturday morning to offer their products to the public in a warm and inviting community space. Stop by to shop, listen to live music, and support local agriculture! Summer hours: 9am-12pm, (May – November)

Every week vendors set up to offer their wares and it is always fun to walk amongst the booths to find the perfect vegetable, bread, honey, plants, wooden spoons and all kinds of other items. I am constantly surprised at the variety of items that are on display for sale.

One of the things that I love the most about the market is that they have a matching SNAP program. If visitors use their EBT card at market the market will match up to $20 in free produce tokens. I think that is a great way to encourage folks to use their benefits for healthy and fresh options.

When I was thinking about a charity for the month I was thinking that there had to be some way to support the Transylvania Farmers Market and I was right. They are a. not for profit and can definitely use donations for the following things:

As a nonprofit organization, our market very much relies upon public support. Donations help our market fund everything from staffing, vendor management, equipment, and programming to advertising, events, food insecurity programming, and community outreach. In 2023, we have seen consistent costs but had a cut in some of our funding. If giving is a part of your financial plan, we would love to be considered!

So please, join me this month as I support the Transylvania Farmers Market. With every comment made on any post this month , Chris and I will make a donation of 50 cents to the market. Let’s all join together and make a difference. Please visit the links below to find out more about this great weekly market.
