As I was preparing to make some cookies for an upcoming Book Club / Tea Party I pulled out my favorite cookie cookbook that was handed down to me from my mom. I love having so many cookbooks from her and from my Grandma Bonnie who used steno pads for her recipe books.
As I thumbed through the pages of the cookie cook book I noticed notations she had made on many recipes. Cookies were a staple in our household growing up and I got my love of making a dozen or more different kinds of cookies for Christmas gifting from none other than my mother. It’s a tradition that I love.
I was struck by how neatly she had written her comments by the cookie recipes. In my recipe books there are stains and horrible handwriting – no neat comments at all. I really use my cookbooks and it is not unusual to find flecks of chocolate, coffee or whatever I am cooking at the moment decorating the pages.
My mom was an okay cook. I wouldn’t say she was as good of a cook as her mom (Grandma Bonnie) but she did okay. But cookies sometimes were a challenge because she forgot about them and we often had burnt bottoms on our cookies. She would scrape those off but you still tasted it. My sister and I often share pictures of cookies we have let over bake in her memory. It was all part of the memories of growing up.
I made Russian Teacakes or Mexican Wedding Cake cookies this time out of that cookbook and I must say those are always a favorite but according to this picture above, Snickerdoodles were a favorite when I was younger. Yum.
