Grandma Bonnie’s Poppy Seed Bread

15 Comments/ 2941/ 1

You know that I love to share recipes from my Grandma Bonnie’s notebook. This is one that mixes up quickly and puts some of those overripe bananas to use.  The difference is a quarter cup of poppyseeds that add just that little pop to an otherwise basic recipe.

It is a great recipe and a bit unusual. I also have a lemon poppy seed recipe and it is more cake like and probably has a zillion more calories but it is yummy. Not a Grandma Bonnie recipe but still yummy.

That’s a lot of poppyseed. We recently started eating chia seed in our Greek yogurt. Supposedly adds protein and helps fill you. Yes, we’re both trying to eat healthier and lose weight. Randy is participating in a weight loss challenge at work with a monetary prize. Good incentive. So no banana bread for me, even though it sounds delicious.

I put chia seeds in my smoothies as well. They are really an extra boost. Good for you guys on the healthy and weight loss adventure.

Love poppy seed bread! I’ll have to try this because G & C don’t like the banana bread I usually make!

This is really a good recipe–not too sweet and holds together well. I love the subtle crunch of the poppy seeds as well.

Hi Beth Ann. Just getting back to baking again. I’m going to try this recipe next. Just made my Mum’s bread pudding earlier this week and now have more overripe bananas. Thanks for sharing

Those bananas get overripe so fast in my house! I always have a stash in my freezer to use. I am very picky about my bananas being spot free. 🙂

Grandma Bonnie’s Poppy Seed Bread looks scrumptious. I hope you are having a slice with a cup of tea poured from your beautiful Valentine teapot. x

That’s a lot of poppyseed…but now I’m wondering how this would work with gluten-free flour and flax/sesame seeds.

It is a lot of poppy seeds, isn’t it? But I do like them so it is fine as long as I don’t have a urine test coming up. 🙂 I do have a story about a poppy seed cake and a positive urine test for my husband in the Navy……
