You read correctly! In an effort to always try to be in the forefront of news I am bringing to you the fact that today is World Poopin’ Day! Thanks to a tweet by Kiva.org I found this out this morning after my last post about my Delta experience. There is no law that says I can only have one post per day, is there? This makes up for the days when I did not post something of significance!!!
So what is World Poopin’ Day? According to the website :
Poop is taboo let’s change that
2.6 billion people lack a safe and efficient way to deal with their waste. Not just messy. Deadly. The majority of illness in the world is caused by, uh, fecal matter.
Consider this…
- Each year, diarrhea kills more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.
- The world loses 70,000 classrooms of kindergartners every year due to diarrhea.
- Lack of sanitation is the world’s biggest cause of infection.
This movement (sorry for the pun) is linking up with social media sites Twitter and Facebook to promote the need for clean water and safe sanitary conditions. A simple text to 27722 with the word POOPIN in the subject will automatically donate $10 to help with the efforts. The organizations involved include:
Making the world a better place, one movement at a time.
We’re partnering with two organizations who are on the front lines of the sanitation crisis.
-
Water.org
Committed to providing safe drinking water and sanitation to people in developing countries.
-
GiveLove.org
GiveLove is working on community-led sanitation projects to treat and compost waste, improve public health, and create jobs around recycling.
What a great idea and what a great way to help out. When there is so much tragedy going on in the world with earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. we feel powerless to do much. This small effort spearheaded by a group of dedicated people is a small way to be involved. I donated….how about you?
