Imagine how thrilled I was last week when we discovered that the beach at Holden Beach, NC was teeming with fossils. Thanks to the recent dredging in the area (see picture of dredging in progress below) we were privy to a once in a lifetime event.
Sea biscuits were washing up in the tide in the hundreds and we were fortunate to be able to collect quite a few for my shell collection. But these are even better than the “ordinary” shell because they are fossils. Some reference them to be anywhere from 30 to 150 million years old. Whoa.
Regardless of how old they are I am thrilled that we were able to find so many. Honestly, this was the best shelling beach we have been to for awhile and we both remarked about how we had had another one of those perfect days that are unforgettable.
I am reading up on how to clean them without compromising the integrity of the fossil and am working slowly toward cleaning up the huge haul we got. Guess what everyone is getting in their stocking this year?
Have you ever found a neat find like this at the beach? I would love to read all about it so make sure you leave me a comment and Comment for a Cause – Operation KeepSafe.
