We are so fortunate that we live so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Named America’s Favorite Drive the Parkway is beautiful any time of the year. In the fall the Parkway is crowded with “peepers” many of whom stop in our lovely little town of Brevard and enjoy it as well.
Chris and I needed a change of scenery so we hit the road one sunny morning and headed to the Parkway. The 469 miles of road winds its way through North Carolina and Virginia and covers scenery and wildlife habitats that go far beyond what the eye can see.
On our trip the other day we stopped and had a picnic lunch, stopped at multiple overlooks, dodged motorcycles and bicyclists and came away feeling renewed and refreshed. While we did not hike (still nursing that silly toe) we got out in nature enough that it helped.
The leaves have not changed much at any of the altitudes yet but you know what? I kind of like the look of green. I have been dragging my feet on the whole fall thing this year for some reason and still being able to see all of the vibrant green was wonderful.
One of the neatest thing is driving through the clouds and when we visited we did just that. It was misty and cloudy and then we would drive out of it into the brilliant sun. Stunning.
Obviously the Blue Ridge Mountains were aptly named. From peak to peak they are some of the most amazing things that I have witnessed and I am so very grateful to live where I live.
If you are interested in following the fall foliage like so many others the Parkway has a great link on their website to keep folks up to date on what the colors are like on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Click here to go to that page directly.
Have you ever driven a part of the Blue Ridge Parkway? I would love to hear what you thought about it so leave me a comment and Comment for a Cause – United Way Iowa Derecho Fund Relief.
