A trip to New York City is always exciting for me. Visiting our son and daughter in law is at the top of my list of favorite things. I should definitely add it to my list of things that make me happy that I wrote about in yesterday’s post. We usually make one or two trips to NYC a year and it never disappoints.
Micah and Wendy lead very busy and full lives and it is always fun to see what they have been up to. Chris and I are happy to just be with them when we visit but there is always so much to do that we try to find a nice balance so we don’t feel like all we did was run around. This trip was perfect for that.
Micah recently took a new job in New Jersey so that meant he needed to buy a car. When one of his friends invited them to their annual apple picking trip outside the city to Barton Orchards in Poughquag, NY and told us we could tag along we were thrilled. Having a car meant it was easier – no car rental – and we were on our way.
Of course this meant our grand puppy Penny could go along and she was more excited than us. Road trips with Penny are fun and she is a great little traveler. If there is one thing I have learned EVERYONE loves a Corgi. I do mean everyone.
Barton Orchards has it all. It is a huge place with something for everyone.

We did pick a few apples but we also took in the dog park, walked around the massive farm, visited the animals and some of the group might have even sampled a bit of the liquid refreshment at the Tap Room.
Our group had 4 dogs. It was hysterical seeing them in the orchard and especially in the dog park. Of course our favorite by far is Penny but the other 3 were pretty darn sweet.
Trying to get a picture with the 4 was fun.
Did I mention animals? I didn’t get to spend my usual time in the petting zoo area but you get the idea. Guess who was my favorite?
There is an art to apple picking and Micah told me that we never took him apple picking growing up. I find that difficult to believe but I am sure he is correct that we deprived him of this experience. The orchard was a fun place to explore and Penny loved it.
There was a lot to do at Barton Orchards and we loved spending our morning there.
Of course there had to be a little bit of drama for the day. Penny discovered some horse poop and rolled in it before anyone saw what she was doing. She was pretty much covered on one side and her face. But since she is such a lady Chris called her Pennypeaux.

Bath time for Penny while Sunny looks on.
A typical trip to NYC does not include apple picking but I am thrilled we were able to spend such a lovely day with Micah and Wendy and some of their friends doing some really fun things.

Leave a commentLove your blog Beth Ann. The apple orchard sounds amazing. We never took our kids when they were little but Tri-County had field trips for them. We finally went ourselves when Kirsten was in College in Champaign. There’s a beautiful apple orchard there.
Oh Penny, Penny. You are bad like Dot when it comes to rolling in yukky stuff. Sometimes we can´t get the smell out for a couple of days. Apple picking sounds like a fun day out. xo
Glad to hear it isn’t just Penny. She was pretty much covered but Micah took it all in stride and washed her and then later she got a good bath at home. She is a character for sure.
What a fun trip! Lady Penny is so sweet!
Lady Penny is pretty wonderful. I was her best friend this trip which made me happy!
It would have made me happy too!!
You are making me want to go to an apple orchard. But with Izzy. What a fun time for all of you, except maybe Penny.
It would be so fun to take Izzy. She would be the best entertainment as long as you kept her away from horse poop. OH wait—she doesn’t have dog tendencies, right? 🙂
Sounds and looks like a great trip. When I was growing up in Surry, VA we had a orchard. I remember picking peaches and I think apples. As a family it was fun. Penny is adorable.
OH I loved to pick peaches growing up. We had an orchard close by and it was always a family event.
I love the puppy photos. I can imagine Penny rolling in the poo. Cracking up about your comment about never having taken them to an apple orchard:)
i know. They both need therapy because of all the things we didn’t do with them. Like get them a dog. Take them to an apple orchard. The list is long!
Apple picking is so much fun and I love that aroma of all of those apples. Looks like a great time…well, with the exception of Penny and the poo situation. Makes for a great story though, doesn’t it? Ha!
We used to go apple picking in Germany but it really isn’t anything like it’s here. There are no orchards with shops etc. In the area I grew up in there were just apple trees grouped in a field and you and your friends got together and picked some. Ally wants a Corgi sooooo bad. She loves them. I think they are so cute as well. 🙂
What, no answers to the apple question? I say Arkansas Black Twig if you can find one, otherwise Rambo. Stayman is the default apple in my part of the world and I will say they are reliable.
