Earlier this summer, Chris and I took my sister and brother in law to worship at a new to us place, Faith Memorial Chapel located in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. While I did not take pictures that day, Chris and I went back recently and I took a few pictures. While it is no longer holding services because it is a summer church only, you will get the idea. When we visited the place was decorated with luscious hanging ferns and a beautiful altar. The pictures I took when the chapel was empty are still beautiful.
This was the 184th year that Faith Memorial Chapel held services so it has a rich history. Faith Memorial Chapel was founded as Faith Chapel in the last part of the nineteenth century by Rt. Reverend Ellison Capers, D.D. who was a Confederate general, who later became Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. Bishop and Mrs. Capers spent summer vacations at Cedar Mountain. A chapel was built in Cedar Mountain and was maintained until Bishop Capers death when it fell into disrepair. The story continues to the 1930’s when the Rev. Dr. Alexander Robert Mitchell. former Archdeacon of the Diocese of South Carolina brought forward a movement to revive the chapel. Services were held on the porch of Mrs. Louis H. Cary. After fire destroyed the Cary home, services were held in August at the home of Dr. Theodore Stone.
The desire to have a summer chapel continued and the current building was the site of the first worship service in 1938. The chapel has had several physical expansions over the years and serves the area during the summer months with visiting pastors from many denominations bringing the. message.
I wanted to worship here more often this summer but unfortunately we were not able to attend more than once but next summer you can bet we will be back. There is something about being in the open air worshipping with the sounds of nature all around that makes the experience even more meaningful.
