International Label Day

51 Comments/ 5347/ 0

It’s here! It’s here!!! International Label Day!!!!  If you are like me you were unaware of the existence of International Label Day but I suspect that some of my more savvy friends like Katybeth at Odd Loves Company were already aware of the existence long before me.  I was given a heads up to it by Rara who writes over at Rarasaur.  Last year she did a fabulous post about it and this year she will do the same.   Since I am a member of Team Poblano she invited me to join in the fun this year and you can go see her post featuring all the “entries” this yearby clicking here..

According to The Urban Dictionary this day is all about the following:

International Label Day is celebrated November 21st. This holiday celebrates the beauty of the words we choose to let shape us, the subcultures that we are proud to be part of, and the surprising meaning of the labels we all choose for ourselves!

We all have many labels and unfortunately most often when we think of the word “label” we think of something negative.  Labels can define someone in many ways and a negative label is something that sticks with you for life.  It can be ugly.  It can be hurtful and damaging.

But today I am  celebrating labels that are beautiful!  Labels that are positive and self affirming.  Labels that empower.  Labels that separate us from the crowd.

If you could have just one label for yourself on International Label Day—what would it be?   Please leave it in the comments—-I really want to create a positive imagine today for International Label Day.   Thanks, Rara, for such a great way to celebrate US!!!!

Caring. Great post! I heard something on the radio a few weeks ago that said when men and women were asked to describe themselves, women tended to choose negative labels or descriptions. Thanks for being positive!

Who knew there was such a day. If I had to choose, how about kind and creative. I know that’s two. However, I hear it’s also International Bend the Rules Day. LOL

I know a good pub … One of the best ways to break the rules is not to do anything. curl up on the couch with queenie and take a nap, read, or zone out. Just relax

What a great day! I wonder who thinks up all these interesting days. Well, some may not think it is positive, but since I am going to use it in its most playful manner – and because I played a little practical joke on the kids this morning to start our day with a bit of humour: Waggish.
Somedays, we all need a bit of humour, and I am not above playing the role of Puck. 😉

I’ve never been a huge fan of labels for the simple fact that so many can be and are negative. Not to mention sometimes they are also restrictive at times. But, thankfully, we do have the power to rip them off and put on new ones if we want to. If I had to label myself with only one label right now it’d be either smart or determined. Great post, Beth!

I agree about the usual negative ones—that is why I said that mine were going to be positive!!! It is more difficult to find positive things at times but we all have those traits and parts of us that are very positive. I love yours, by the way! Smart and determined are absolutely wonderful labels!!!

Wee! Happy International Label Day to you too!! Isn’t it a fun day 🙂 I love this celebration!

For my label I chose, ‘Cupcake’. Cupcakes are big part of my illustration career and people are beginning calling me one as well. They probably don’t think I’m a real one though, but I think it stands for being kind and sweet to others. 🙂

Hmmm… just one label? Ai ya. I don’t know. Not “strong” because I’m not and because that can be a hindrance…. Hmm… maybe “present.” Like… present for the moments in life, present for my people, present when it’s difficult to show up.
