Like a Moth Drawn to a Flame

14 Comments/ 399/ 2

I am drawn like a moth to a flame to many things but today I want to feature another one of my favorite podcasts.  As a fairly recent convert to podcast listening I am always looking for ones that interest me.

I have shared my love of Ear Hustle and Terrible Thanks for Asking in previous posts and you can read those by clicking on those links.  While both of these offer totally different topics they are very engaging and I have found myself very anxiously awaiting the next set of episodes. While I wait for those I have to explore others to keep me occupied on those long trips.

I love the true crime podcasts and sometimes when Chris is with me he has indicated that he is a little concerned that I am learning all about these murders and serial killers but those subjects are just intriguing to me.  But I will save my favorites of those and share them at a later date.

Today my top storytelling podcast is The Moth,  As a blogger I fancy myself as a bit of a storyteller.  My stories may not always be engaging and profound but I do like to tell them.

The Moth is storytelling extraordinaire.  Our oldest son told me about the series a couple years ago and thought I would like it.  It took me awhile to jump on board the podcast boat but once I did I was thrilled to remember that this was one he had pointed me towards.  He was right.  I love it.

The Moth‘s tagline is True Stories Told Live.  Perfect.  Ordinary people like you and me have the chance to tell their stories.  In public venues.  All over the place.   There are several avenues for “performing” as cited on their website:

Mainstage

Curated events featuring five tellers who develop and shape their stories with our directors. Beyond theater, The Moth Mainstage is a community where entertainment and enlightenment merge.

StorySLAM

Open-mic storytelling competitions. Open to anyone with a five-minute story to share on the night’s theme. Come tell a story, or just enjoy the show!

GrandSLAM

After ten StorySLAMs in a city, the winners then compete for the title of GrandSLAM Champion with a brand new story. This is the ultimate battle of wits and words.

The StorySLAM is what I really enjoy on the podcast.  A theme is highlighted and the storyteller tells their experience with that theme.  The stories are varied, brilliant, and engaging.  Sometimes the stories are sad but I always come away with a sense of awe at the effect that a short 5 minute story can have on me.

I hope to be able to attend a StorySLAM someday as they are often held in Asheville.  I think being in the audience would be a treat and maybe, just maybe, someday I might get up enough courage to tell a story of my own.

If you are intrigued you can listen to podcasts from The Moth on your phone or even on your computer by going to their website and downloading an episode.  I suspect like me you might get pulled into the web of The Moth.

If you listen to podcasts I would love to know some of your favorites.  I have a trip coming up and need some more things to listen to .  Remember all comments this month go to support our Comments for a Cause Cooperative Christian Ministry based out of Concord, NC.   Each comment means a 50 cent donation so please comment often.

Old Girls in Low Cotton

Another great book by John Green. I have become a huge fan of John Green since my reading of A Fault in our Stars and this book was another that did not disappoint me at all. It was a story of a child prodigy, a lot of anagrams, and a b...
