The King’s Kitchen- A Restaurant with Heart

6 Comments/ 84/ 0

On a recent trip to Charlotte, North Carolina for a wedding, we met long time friends for lunch at a very special place that Chris found close to our hotel – The King’s Kitchen. He knew that the mission of this place would make me happy and he was totally correct on that. The King’s Kitchen is more than a restaurant. It is a non profit that gives 100% of its profit to feed the hungry in the Charlotte area.

Far too many of our fellow Charlotte residents suffer from extreme life-challenges such as poverty, homelessness and the slow, uphill battle of recovering from substance abuse or incarceration. Our vision and goal each day at The King’s Kitchen is to raise funds to feed the spiritual and physical needs of those who have the least in our community and to train and equip those previously unemployable in the restaurant trade. (taken from The King’s Kitchen website)

Now I think this is brilliant and the food is southern inspired sourced from Carolina farms and purveyors and was really, really, really good. Did I say it was really good? We started off with some delicious corn bread served with some special butter.

Lunch for both of us was huge and filling. Chris chose the Shrimp Po Boy and I HAD to have the shrimp and grits. The grits were so creamy and the seasoning of this dish was spicy but just not so spicy you had a mouth on fire. Perfect.

They have a great dessert menu as well and we got some banana pudding, a southern delight, but ate it too fast for a picture. Imagine that.

The place was not busy when we got there at opening time and there were a few others who were there who had reservations but by the time we left about 90 minutes later the place was hopping and loud. It is an open space so if you are looking for an intimate conversation it might be a little bit difficult here.

This place makes my heart happy. Good food, beautiful restaurant and really great food cooked to perfection. If you are downtown Charlotte I would definitely recommend this place and urge you to visit. Who doesn’t love.a good restaurant and one with a mission of giving back? Even better.

The King’s Kitchen is located at 129 W Trade Street in Charlotte. For more information click here to go directly to their website.

What do you think? Would you visit this restaurant? Have you heard of anything similar where you live? I would love to hear about it in the comments so please Comment for a Cause – The Augustine Literacy Project.

Sounds like a place I would love! I sure would have liked to see a picture of that dessert. Oh well, you’ll have to go back one day and take a picture!

I’ve seen a sign for a restaurant that advertises itself similarly in Tennessee–forget now whether it was Kingsport, Johnson City, or in between them. It’s a nice idea. There’s a local church that’s trying to open a store that targets the recovery community. It’s not open yet.

The restaurant certainly looks as if people are trying to make it work!
