Welcome to Maine

24 Comments/ 548/ 0

Our vacation in Maine started out like the above picture. Rain, rain, and more rain. As we flew into Bangor we experienced torrential downpours. This was definitely NOT the time to have soft sided luggage like I had. Trust me, I was damp for a few days. We got our luggage and had to trudge through the downpour and standing water to get to our rental car but we made it. Whew. Chris wanted an SUV and they told us if we were going into Canada they would not give us one as they frequently get stripped for parts. So we ticked that off our list and soldiered on through the rain.

It’s been awhile since we had an adventure of sorts so I guess we were due. Google Maps took us on some ridiculous route where there was absolutely nothing. Houses were dark. No businesses. No gas stations. Not even a fast food place between Bangor and Lubec where we were spending the first two nights.

It was kind of eerie but we finally made it to “civilization” and found our accommodations in the dark and rain . Of course since we arrived at 8:30 pm there was absolutely nothing open in the little town including the attached restaurant. After finally finding our little unit ( the directions were definitely not good and they had not left any lights on for us) we decided that we would make a run to the Dollar General that we saw on the outskirts when we drove in. Say what you will about Dollar General but it saved us that night. Maybe not the healthiest thing but at least we got something to eat after a long day of travel.

Chris promised me that this place we were staying had a wonderful view and he was right. Of course we couldn’t see past our hands when we checked in but in the morning I saw what was right outside our door. It was still foggy and a bit drizzly but we were officially on vacation and ready to explore.

The Town of Lubec is situated on the coast of Maine. According to the US Census of 2020, the population is 1,258, with an increase during the busier summer months. Geographically, it is the Easternmost point of land in the contiguous United States. West Quoddy Head lighthouse is easily accessible and is a popular tourist destination and of course that was one of our destinations.

We hit the local coffee shop for our first taste of Maine blueberries – this time in a muffin that did not disappoint.

.

We walked around town a little bit and spied a lighthouse in the distance — this one was actually in Canada and this was as close as we got to it.

We saw some interesting things in town including this “sculpture” and a Little Free Library.

.

.

I think that is enough for today but come back tomorrow when I share a little bit more about things around Lubec . It is a little town that would be the perfect place for a writer to hole up in to write that great American novel.
