Oh, that’s a fun one. Isn’t it funny how time has changed and family photos used to be so very posed… Photography has come a long way, that’s for sure. 🙂
I only have two choices here. But which one is you? The girl in the front row? I love looking at these “vintage” photos and studying the glasses, hair styles, fashions.
I agree with bocafrau that photography has come a long ways. I love the much more relaxed and candid professional images of today, the journalistic approach to shooting events (like weddings). Formal portraits are still needed, though.
very interesting. Although I wouldn’t necessarily say they look sad in the first pic — more posed.
I remember when we had family photos done, the photographer said “relax your face” — so we think yep, just get relaxed before he takes the shot….but!!! he took the shot!! ugh.
then he’s all like “big smiles” and I’m just like….gggrrrrrr. thanks for the warning.
I felt like I looked sad. Very sad. Whose idea is it to not make people look like they are happy to have their picture taken? I mean we all LOVE to have our picture taken, right??? 🙂
Well I am not sure about that!!! I am sure it was for a church directory back in the day……the day of bad hair and 70’s fashion, that is. Thanks for stopping by, Helene!!!
Great picture, this is how I remember you all when I baby sat!!! But I think “Preacher Brown” was smiling in both, he always seemed happy. So glad we got connected again, love be able to keep in touch.
I wondered if you would see this! Yes—Daddy always seemed like he was smiling, didn’t he? I thought this picture was pretty hysterical when I ran across it last tie I visited my mom. I don’t remember the “serious” one at all.
For one of my grandmother’s birthdays my mother wanted to have a family portrait done. We all showed up at the portrait studio from our various residences & we were all wearing black! The photographer asked us not to smile too much, but just to look natural. The end result was creepy (in my opinion) but my grandmother loved it. Brrrrrrrr . . .
Love it. when I took my visa photo you can’t smile since it messes with the facial recognition software so I look like a serial killer. Every time I go through customs I’m mortified when they look at my photo.
Oh my passport picture looks like a mug shot. My license is good as they did not tell me to not smile—the passport pic—that is quite another story . And I am stuck with it for 10 years…..
Actually my Boston DMV photo is the best photo of me ever. We have the proof on the fridge. I take horrible pictures. I thought about using it for my blog, but can’t get it to work without it looking like a DMV pic.

I am sure this one was for a church directory but I have no clue why they said to not smile. 🙂 Silly!

I am the one in the front. I can not believe you did not recognize me. 🙂 Buck teeth and all!!! 🙂
This is a great idea, Beth Ann! I love to see totally new takes on what a simple photo post can accomplish. Pretty cool!
Hugs from Ecuador,
Kathy
Who knows why they took the sad one? Maybe my mom will comment later and tell me why. I am sure she will be horrified that I posted this……

These are great photos! Your photographer must have had a sense of humor.

I love these pictures. Wasn’t it hard to keep a straight, unsmiling face?
Very hard! It isn’t me at all!

I bet it was creepy! That is so funny!!! Black and creepy!
It was very creepy! And the photographer chose to use one of those brown muddy looking back drops – creepo!
🙂
That’s funny. Are you the one in front? I had trouble recognizing you.
Yep===I am the “baby”. I may have changed a bit since then……
I love these pictures! You look so cute. I can see you are all trying hard to be serious but honestly, you didn’t fool me.
Thanks, Darlene! I was nothing but cute, hahhhhahhahhahah! Those were many years of “awkwardness” for sure!

I think everyone looks better when the smile, I have to make the effort though or my serious expression prevails.
It is sometimes difficult for me to NOT smile. 🙂
Oh those classes! Every one is wearing them except Mark.
Haha!!! I thought you would say much more about this picture!
I don’t think I realized how strong the Brown genes are…I see traces of all us cousins in our parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents!
