The world has certainly been filled with disasters recently, hasn’t it? It has been a tough few weeks with hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, rock slides and other natural disasters which have affected so many individuals. It is difficult to watch the news because every day it is yet another disaster.
On It’s Just Life I promote a cause monthly and have a program called Comments for a Cause. For each comment made on the blog on any post during the month Chris and I make a donation to that specific cause. In September 2017 we chose UMCOR Hurricane Harvey Relief. We upped the game this month and said we would donate $1 per comment instead of the usual 50 cents.
Chris and I made a donation of $250 to help with Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts through this organization. I feel confident that our small donation will be used to help improve conditions and life for those affected.
The one agency that I go to during times of disasters such as Hurricane Harvey is UMCOR — United Methodist Committee on Relief. Aside from being a United Methodist organization it is THE best at getting boots on the ground immediately after a disaster and staying through after many other organizations leave. I read someplace that they stayed 7 years post Katrina. That’s a long time but necessary.
UMCOR makes sure that 100% of its donations go to the area that the giver designates. Overhead costs and salaries are covered through other donations made through theOne Great Hour of Sharing collections and if need be an Undesignated Advance #999895.
Knowing that the money we donate is actually going to efforts to help and not just for overhead makes a huge difference to me. So often we read how charitable organizations have high overhead and administrative costs. Not the case with UMCOR. So that is why I am choosing to support them again with Comments for a Cause in October. The recent storm Irma affected so many people in different areas and I believe that continuing to support UMCOR with my Comments for a Cause is the best choice right now. The donation will be earmarked Irma recovery both within the mainland US and beyond in the other areas that were affected.
Please know that any comment made on It’s Just Life during the month of October 2017 means we will donate $1 to UMCOR Hurricane Irma Relief.
I posted this before from the UMCOR website but I believe that it is important to repost. Please consider how YOU can give.

Thank you for stopping by–it’s people like you who make the difference in the world.
Beth Ann, I am always truly humbled by your words and actions. I try to make a positive difference, too. “Be the change.” HUGS.
A good organization. I remember One Great Hour of Sharing from growing up Presbyterian. I’m glad you’ve found an organization where all the donations go to relief. That always worries me when I donate to some larger organizations.
This truly sounds like a wonderful organization, one I will gladly donate to myself in order to help those affected by the recent storms. I considered myself so lucky that we didn’t have to deal with too much damage or inconveniences from Irma.
These natural disasters are on everyone’s mind these days. This organization is reputable and a perfect choice for Comments for a Cause. Well done!
Bless you, Beth Ann, for setting for us an example of compassion. It is something we need more than ever today.
Well done Beth Ann. This is a great way to donate.
Thanks Judith. there is so much need out there and it is difficult to donate everywhere but I know UMCOR does a great job. Thanks for stopping in!
Great Comments for a Cause recipient, worth repeating back to back. 🙂
Thanks, Val. I rarely repeat but UMCOR is my go to for disaster relief and they have been on Comments for a Cause several times.
Hmm. “If anyone does, U-M-COR should have a good idea / Of what to do about the storm disaster called Maria”?
(A “liar/Mariah” rhyme popped into my head last week. I’ve been trying to think of a better one about Hurricane Maria, so far without success.)
