Without doubt, my favorite part of our recent trip to Scotland was visiting the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye. These magical waterfalls located on the northern slopes of the magnificent Black Cuillin range, are beautiful crystal-clear blue pools on the Allt Coire a’ Mhadaidh (Burn of the Dog), which can be seen winding down the hillside of Coire na Creiche into Glen Brittle where it becomes the River Brittle. It is a magnificent view.

The 2.4 kilometer trek was mostly a nice gravel path and it was a moderate hike with plenty of places to stop and view the magnificent waterfalls along the way.

While it seems tranquil and relaxing today, the history is somewhat different. In 1601 the area was the scene of the last of Scotland’s clan battles, and one of the bloodiest ever recorded in clan history. It is here the MacDonalds of Sleat and the MacLeods of Dunvegan saw the end of the long and brutal campaign of the Wars of the One-Eyed Woman. Hey- this is what history says and I didn’t make that up.

The waters are cold even though they look so inviting and swimmers often wear wetsuits even when the temperatures outside the water are warm.

Misty and a bit rainy at times but thoroughly enjoyable, we loved our hike at this particular spot and I will always remember it as the best waterfall hike I have had other than the one in Croatia.

What do you think? Would you have loved this hike as much as I did?
