Kissing Concrete

22 Comments/ 2320/ 0

I am watching the Carolina / Ohio game on my laptop at Panera since I am traveling and without Internet and I decided that since I had not scheduled a post for Saturday ahead like I did the rest of the week I should takadvantage of my wifi and just do it!  So here we go!

I spent a few days with my mom and had a great visit with her!  I love to spend time with her and it does not happen often enough since I am in Iowa and she is in Ohio.  But the visit was not without excitement. I got to my mom’s house in the retirement community on Monday afternoon and was going to bring in my suitcase so she followed me out. As I rounded thecorner of the car I saw it.  And I was powerless to do anything.  I was moving in slo mo but nothing could have prepared me for what was happening right in front of me.  Somehow my mom fell and I could not get to her in time.  She did, in fact, kiss concrete and it was not fun.

She was alert and able to talk to me but the blood…..oh the blood.  Those of you who  have followed me for awhile know that I do not do well with blood.  Not at all!  I usually faint at the tiniest blood letting but not this time because it was my mom and I had to take care of her.  The good news is that she came out of it pretty well considering how bad it could have been.  I won’t go into all of the gory details but after a visit from the on site nurse and a trip to the hospital for 3 stitches we settled in for the night.  No broken bones but a pretty spectacular looking face were the end result.

I would not recommend concrete kissing for anyone but especially not for an octogenarian!   I have to say that this is the first time I can remember in a long time that I have been scared, really scared! It was not a good feeling and one that I do not want to repeat ever.  I am grateful I was there but truth be known I was most likely the reason she fell as she was talking to me and somehow fell.  So I feel responsible for her colorful face now!  So to my mom who is a faithful  reader and follower—-I love you and am so grateful you are okay!!!!!

That is so sad, but really glad she didn’t break any bones! Feeling helpless is horrible, but good thing she got fixed up right away.

Thanks, Karen! If it had to happen I am just very glad I was there to help out !!! Otherwise I am not sure how long she would have laid there on the sidewalk! I shudder to think! I know God was there!

She probably got distracted by talking to you and it is very easy to lose your balance when distracted. How do I know that??? 🙂
Anyway, don’t feel guilty or think it was your fault. You just happened to be there at the time. And you kept your cool and was able to assist her and get help.
So, don’t let the fall and guilt feelings overshadow the memory of your very nice visit with her..

I rated this post as excellent, because your mom is okay..Things happen so fast sometimes, and we have no control of them, so, all we can do is pray for the best..
And on the brighter side…It put a little ‘color’ in her cheeks..(lol?)
I’m so happy she’s all right Beth Ann..She has to be a wonderful woman to have raised a person like you..

Oh Beth Ann, I am so sorry to hear this I know exactly what you’re going through! I am really glad your mom is okay. There is absolutely no reason to beat yourself up over this – it was just an accident. You are an awesome daughter and you kicked it into high gear, taking care of the situation even though you are normally squeemish. I truly think that God was helping you through step-by-step! 🙂 Take care friend and if you need a Sandwich shoulder, I am here for you! xoxo

We did have a great visit even though it was not quite how she expected it to be!!!! Add to it that the hot water heater went out the next day and was leaking in the basement we really were ready for a quiet day!

Thanks to Beth Ann for being there. NONE OF IT WAS HER FAULT! My nose looked like Rudolph the Reindeer but it is looking better now. I am proud of her and all of my children. I have been blessed. God is good!

So glad your Mom is ok. God was right there with you both. I know she is always glad to have you with her, as any mother is with their child. Hold those times together close.

That slow motion feeling has got to be the worst when you experience an accident or witness an accident. It leaves you feeling so helpless. I am so glad your mom is okay.

I’m glad she’s ok, too! My mom did that once, and it’s so hard to see. She laughed about it afterward as she made up the story to tell everyone who asked how she got to look that way.
