Sculpture Walk in Brevard, North Carolina

10 Comments/ 1865/ 0

We have lived outside of Brevard, NC for 5 1/2 years and I realized that I have never highlighted the sculptures that grace our little town on It’s Just Life. Today I am going to change that. You guys know I love outdoor art installations from all of my years of posting and I just never made it a point to find all of them at one time. Chris and I set out on a brisk but sunny Sunday morning to walk the town, so to speak.

White and gray squirrels created by Kathryn Wilson made from North Carolina marble and limestone. These guys sit outside the Brevard City Hall.

The thing I like about the sculptures in Brevard is the fact that they blend into the landscape. We discovered sculptures that we probably have walked by multiple times but didn’t realize they were there. The sculpture project features native animals so I guess it makes sense that they blend into the landscape.

A Steel Black Bear created by Richard Merrill stands outside City Hall on Main Street.
Monarch Butterflies created from copper grace the side of our cute Co-ed Theater
on Main Street and is created by Aaron Alderman.

Physical maps are available at the Visitor Center located at 175 East Main Street or you can download a map by clicking here and here. Just a note when using this map. It is not to scale and it helps to read the description on the inside of the brochure to know more about the location of the sculptures. We did a lot of looking and backtracking.

A cast bronze wild turkey created by artist Christine Kosiba finds its home on
the front lawn of First Citizen’s Bank.
A symbol of freedom, the golden eagle, graces the lawn of the Transylvania County Arts Center on Caldwell Street. This sculpture was created by sculptor Chris Worley and has am impressive wing span of 5 feet.

The 20 sculptures are made of various materials – bronze, copper, stone, and steel – and depict animals that are either native to the area or ones that have been recently re-introduced. Various artists have created the sculptures and it is a testament to the quality of artists that we have living in North Carolina.

Sculptor Aaron Alderman created a herd of horses that reside on the lawn of the Transylvania Arts Center. They were difficult to photograph them all in one shot but you can see that they are stunning and appropriately created from horseshoes.
The final sculpture of the post is this Great Horned Owl that can be found on Broad Street. This sculpture is created by Aaron Alderman and is one that you have to look up to discover.

I am proud to live in an area where arts are such a vital part. Life in Brevard is filled with music, visual art, and pride and I would encourage anyone who loves small town charm to take the time to check out Brevard, North Carolina. Come back tomorrow to view a few more sculptures that grace our streets in Brevard. Don’t forget to leave me a comment and Comment for a Cause – Copeland Oaks Life Care Fund.
