Teapots, Racing Pigs, Peanuts and Swimming Pigs

23 Comments/ 3023/ 0

The National Peanut Festival offered a lot of different things.  From teapots to racing pigs to peanuts to swimming pigs—it was all there. My first post here focused on a lot of the fun things that we were able to see at our first visit to the famous National Peanut Festival in Dothan, Alabama.  Chris and I had a nice day visiting the festival and even though things were just beginning to get busy just about when we were getting ready to leave we still found plenty of things to see and do as we wandered around the site.NPF Collage

What would a fair be without rides?  There were plenty to appeal to any fair goer seeking a few thrills.  I bet you can figure out which one was my favorite. (Even if it was for kids.)

teapot rideOne of the things that I was most excited about was going to see the Swifty Swine pig racing show.  I mean who doesn’t want to watch pigs race for Oreo cookies?  When we got there we found out that not only did they race for Oreos – they also swim.  Amazing.  Swifty Swine CollageSo the track was up, the Oreo was ready and the pigs were introduced one by one.  Do you know how difficult it is to photograph racing pigs?  Very difficult.   But I did manage to get a quick video of the little porkers.
This little pig was not too thrilled with going swimming.  He had to be coaxed a little bit.
We walked through several buildings with exhibits and many were done by high school FFA or other groups.  All featured the theme of Blue Ribbon Winner which was the theme for the year and I loved seeing the fun peanut creations.Booth CollageThere was even a section for cake decorating and the pig cake was by far my favorite one.
pigChris and I had fun checking out the National Peanut Festival this year.  I think I satisfied my need to see it and doubt I will feel the need to go again next year.  It was fun but I am now ready for the next experience.

I love that pig cake! The racing pigs were cute and I trust they were being treated well.

I think they were treated well–they had a nice big trailer and they seemed very happy to race for the fun of it. 🙂

As much as you love pigs, you certainly need to make a trip to Smithfield, VA – the ham capital of the world!

There were 3 sets of pigs and these were the last racing ones that I managed to catch. They were so fast!

That’s a lot of pig stuff for a peanut festival.

It was a lot of pig stuff! But it was fun and they were all part of the experience so I guess that makes it all part of the fun.

I have to agree – the pig cake is cute! I’ve never seen a pig racing show where they’ve made the pigs also swim – very interesting…

The swimming pig was very reluctant. I can’t say I blame him/her. After all the Oreos I tasted they have lost favor with me. 🙂

Looks a lot like a county fair… Looks like fun! I hope you were able to acquire fried foods on a stick! Happy Autumn.

It was exactly like a county fair but honestly–not as great. Very few foods on a stick–all we got was a pretzel and it was not even on a stick. I miss the Minnesota State Fair. :-0

I have never heard of a pig swimming and I lived on a farm when I was a kid.
