I know you all think that I am just a 50 something woman from the Midwest who spends her time collecting teapots and spoiling her cats. I am about to crush those images for you so be prepared.
I figured out long ago that I may not be cut out for fame and fortune and I am okay with that. I like my life. Scratch that. I love my life. All of it. All the bits and pieces. All the messiness of it sometimes is what makes my life my life.
But I am like many who get dazzled by celebrity status and wonder “what if” fame knocked on my door? I thought it had one day when I got a new follower on Twitter.
Oh I was excited. I sent a text to both of my sons saying that Rihanna was now my Twitter follower. I had arrived!!!! Look—it says she follows me!!!! Who knew that a superstar like Rihanna would know about little old me.
And then Aaron burst my bubble and said “Mom—that is not a verified account. It is not the “real” Rihanna.” Way to go, Aaron. Rain on my parade. Burst my bubble, Crush my dreams.
So I decided to just be happy being little old me and continue living my life like I always have. But life is funny and because of a meeting with a wonderful man at a Social Media Breakfast several months ago I now have a great fun experience which undoubtedly will lead to fortune and fame.
I met Bill Schickel who is the station manager of a local radio station--KCMR. Bill started reading my blog and liked what I rambled on and on about, I guess, and asked me to consider being a small part of their radio family. I met with the delightful and lovely Cynthia Tompkins and the rest is history. On Tuesday mornings you will find me joining her for a 5 minute (give or take) segment on her Bright Sounds show chatting about what is on my blog. The main problem is keeping it to 5 minutes. I have a lot to say.
So if you ever want to hear what my voice actually sounds like feel free to tune in on Tuesday mornings. I usually go on around 8:30ish a.m. (Central time) and KCMR is located at 97.9 FM and can also be streamed online by going to their website here. It has been a fun thing to do and I am grateful to Bill and Cynthia for welcoming me and including me in their family.
KCMR has also moved into a wonderful facility and will be celebrating with a Grand Opening on May 16th beginning at 2 pm at their studios at 316 N Federal Ave in Mason City. They would love to have you stop in if you are in the area to help celebrate!

Thanks!!! Too sweet!
Congratulations – sounds like an exciting enterprise.
It is fun—and I am having fun with the experience. Thanks, Carl.
How fun! Good for you.
🙂 It is fun!
Gotta watch for those blue check marks on those twitter accounts. Been fooled myself!
Radio gig. WhooHoo. So proud, happy and excited for you, friend. Well deserved recognition. Xoxo Diane
Aw, thanks, Diane! I knew someone else would understand my lack of blue check mark sadness! 🙂
Look at you! I am so proud but not at all surprised that you are making a splash with your blog and with just being who you are!!
It sounds more than it really actually is but I am grateful to Bill for asking me to join in the fun there. They are a really great team and I am having so much fun talking about topics on my blog. Last week I talked about Leslie! 🙂
I love your radio spot. I still call it a radio show:) If we’re in town, we’ll have to stop by the open house.
You definitely need to stop in for the open house—Bill would love to have you guys there! He is such a supporter of all of the bloggers and businesses locally. It has been a fun, fun thing!
Enjoy life in the lime light:)
Haha!!! Thanks! I am really not a publicity hound even though this post makes it sound that way. 🙂 I will try to maintain my humble roots in my fame. Thanks for stopping by!!!
Yayy!! Congratulations!
Haha! Thanks. It sounds like I am big stuff, doesn’t it? But hey—if I can send a few more listeners KCMR way it is all good. I know that they now have my husband listening at least! 🙂
That’s great! You never know what connections you will form just by chatting. Awesome.
Thanks! I can talk. Trust me, I can talk. 🙂
Lol. I’m with you on that!
I hate when someone bursts your bubble. Of course, I suppose at times it’s best to know the truth. Have fun with the radio gig!
Sometimes your own children are the best at bursting your bubble, I have found! 🙂 I am over it now. I can live with the disappointment. 🙂
I shall always be one of your most dedicated fans, even if I don’t follow you on Twitter. You are the best, Beth Ann. The best!!! (exclamation marks added just for you.)
How COOL is that??? I’m going to put a reminder in my phone right now to tune in tomorrow morning!
Woo-Hoo, you have definitely ARRIVED, Beth Ann — good for you! Nothing like instant popularity (and to think it all started with Rihanna, heehee!!)
I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT……I told you one day I would get to say, ” I knew her when!” Congratulations on the new gig!
How exciting! I hope you have a lot of fun with your radio segment.
Clearly the fake Rihanna has some good taste! 🙂
You think? :-). I am proud to be followed by fake Rihanna.
What a great gig! You are perfect for it too. Have fun and I’ll be able to say “I knew you when..”
(I actually thought you were already famous) XO
You are all so kind. :-). It makes my heart happy. The station is really a great place.
Gosh, Beth Ann, the radio gig is really, really awesome. Sorry about the Rihanna thing being a bust, but, I think, your radio show thing is WAY bigger than that!!!!!
Hugs from Ecuador,
Kathy
Awesome. Even if it isn’t the real Rihanna who cares…
Thanks, Margie! I felt special for a minute.
So cool! Congratulations on the new gig – have so much fun with it!
I am having fun. The hardest thing is keeping it short . Cynthia and I could probably talk for an hour.
You’ve been doing great on the radio! What a great partnership.
Thanks, Val. You guys are so wonderful to tune in and support me. It means an awful lot to me. Thanks!
Congrats! That’s exciting!
Well—-it is a small town but still—-it is fun and I am having a good time with it so that is what matters, right?
It is!
Sorry about the Rihanna thing but glad to hear you are the airwaves now!
Well it was too good to be true, right??? Thanks for the nice thoughts!!!

It is!!! Indeed. And unexpected tun at that!
Sounds fun! Cool you.. 🙂 Congratulations!! I loved hearing your voice in the video for the book event.
Haha! Thanks! I am such a dork sometimes but Cynthia is the professional who can pull me together!
I’ve often said I hate kids, sometimes. That being said fame didn’t give up and neither did you! Sounds like such a fun gig and I’m sure it will lead to bigger and better things! Maybe your own morning show! or COSCO SAMPLE LADY!!
Even if I bottom out here with my 5 minutes of fame a week I am happy about it. I have met some lovely new folks and am enjoying all that is KCMR now. 🙂 Cosco Sample Lady—why stop there??? The wold is my oyster!
Wow, you really are a celebrity! I would love to hear what you have to say in the radio, hope I can tune in. I dont have a twitter account or I’d “follow you” 🙂
Aw—thanks so much!!!! It is really just a fun little thing for me and I am thrilled to be able to meet new folks. 🙂 I hope no one took this post the wrong way—-I really am NOT famous nor will I ever be. Just having fun with things that have dropped in my lap.
Just a fun opportunity for sweet humble you….enjoy!!!
that is so cool!! Way to go. I did some radio when I was in university and it was so much fun. you’ll really enjoy this. Congrats. And don’t forget us little people who always have loved you. 🙂
I am not doing the actually technical part of it–trust me. I would mess that up totally . But I can talk! 🙂 And I don’t have to worry if it is a bad hair day.
I have not heard you yet but hope to next time. Now I can tell everyone that my daughter is on the radio!
I am not really famous but it is a lot of fun to do it every week.
So cool that you are on the radio!
It has been a fun thing, I won’t deny!
Wow, a radio star! And I can say I knew you when . . .
