Comments for a Cause has highlighted several charities over the years that work directly with children and perhaps that is because there are absolutely so many wonderful charities that provide services to children. But before I share who our June recipient will be I need to do a quick recap for our May recipient —SAFE, Inc. of Transylvania County.
If you remember from my May 1st post here I chose a local organization which provides services for victims of domestic violence. Their mission statement is as follows:
SAFE will lead our community in eliminating domestic violence and sexual violence through prevention, advocacy, education and healing.
Now while I sincerely wish there was no need for their services the facts are brutally clear that there is domestic violence everywhere and the numbers are staggering. Domestic violence affects not only women and men but also children and that is one of the most heart breaking facts for me to realize. So this past month I embraced all of your comments on the blog and am happy to report that Chris and I will be making a donation of $145.50 to SAFE, Inc. of Transylvania County as a result of your comments. Remember a single comment means a 50 cent donation and they do add up over the month so thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to read my posts and leave a comment now and then. I know you all have busy lives so it means more to me than you will ever realize. Thank you.
I have so many “causes” in the file for future months and am always looking for great ones that fit with who I am and what my beliefs are. I think this next one fills a definite need and I am pleased to announce that our Comments for a Cause for the month of June will be Shriners Hospitals for Children.
My knowledge of the Shriners was pretty limited for a long time. Mainly all I knew was that they wore fun hats (fez) and drove miniature little cars in parades. Chris’s Grandpa Ralph was a Shriner and he often shared some of the charitable works that his group helped with and I was inspired by these men in little hats many times.
As I was doing some research on line to find out more about what these Shriners Hospitals for Children actually do I discovered that they have a really cute ambassador bear named Fezzy. I found all of this information on their website here. Now who can resist that face?
So what do they do exactly? According to their website this is their purpose and mission:
Through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Our 22 locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and relies on the generosity of donors. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.
MISSION
Shriners Hospitals for Children has a mission to:*Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment.
*Provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals.
*Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families.
*This mission is carried out without regard to race, color, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay.
I don’t know about you but I think that this is a winner and I challenge each of you to join in my support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children by coming back to It’s Just Life frequently this month to leave a comment. For each comment left on ANY post during the month Chris and I will make a 50 cent donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children. So comment often and share with a friend so that they can comment as well. We will cap the donation at $500 and wouldn’t it be great to reach that goal this month?
As always thanks again for your time and comments. Feel free to check out the links below to get more information about this wonderful charity.

Thanks, Virginia! Love you heaps!
The Shriners Hospitals for Children have been around a very long time and have done such good work. I have a friend who was a recipient of their generosity when she was a child in England and it saved her life. This is definitely a worthwhile cause and I am so pleased you chose it for this month. You and Chris are such generous and kind people, and I am proud to support you and your blog. XO
I love that you actually know someone who has been helped by this organization. That makes my heart truly happy. You are always such a great supporter and this wouldn’t work if there were not people like you who left comments. Thank YOU!
You are very welcome. It is my pleasure.
Way to go Beth Ann! Great job. Looking forward to seeing all your posts for June and commenting on them!
A great cause! And how cute is their little bear mascot. I bet that really helps children who may be feeling scared while at the hospital. My daughter still has a knitted bear that she was given 4 years ago when she had to get stitches. Definitely helped.
hanks so much for stopping by and I agree–that bear is adorable! It think this is going to be the best month ever.
Another worthy choice Beth Ann. The Shriner’s do amazing charitable works for many people, young and not so young. Congratulations to both SAFE Inc. of Transylvania and to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children for being chosen as recipients of your Comments For A Cause.
Thanks, Jake. They do some amazing work across the board and I am so happy that they will be focused on this month. Thanks for stopping by!

We are four generation Lakesiders. Thank you for this great idea.
Four generations is amazing!!! Thank you for taking the time to read and leave a comment! That’s another 50 cents!!!!
Beth Ann – I, too, love Lakeside, and I really learned a lot about the cat situation (plus recognized a couple of the cats in your picture). Your article is very fair and balanced, and it might be worth offering for distribution in the Lakesider. Thanks, too, for your generosity.
Carol— thank you so much. I am such a cat lover and understand it can become an issue. I live in a gated community in the mountains of NC and we have a similar feral cat issue. Fortunately there are a lot of folks who are taking charge of a spay and neuter program and the population is being managed.
