I grew up with a father who loved to listen to birds and identify them. I remember him having binoculars to check them out and to try to identify them in our yard. I have always have bird feeders around and enjoyed seeing them even if I could not identify them. I do not have any feeders up now, largely due to bears, and I do miss them but it does not mean the birds are gone.
The other day I was sitting on our newly assembled deck furniture ( a nice spruce up on our back deck) and was just thinking about how many different birds I could hear but did not know who they were. I didn’t see a lot of them but they were noisy so I used my handy dandy Merlin Bird ID app on my phone.
So these are just a few of the birds that were close enough to pick up on the app. It’s a really great tool to try to determine what you are hearing or seeing. I would highly recommend it and it is easy to identify by sound or by sight with this app. You can learn more about this Cornell Lab sponsored app by clicking here.
I am not the only one who likes the birds….

Leave a commentThanks- sounds like a good app for me! There are so many things I don’t know- like specific things about birds, plants, trees, etc.
It’s a really great app and it has entertained me lately!
What a great app to have. I think l will try it out. Love the pictures of your kittys .
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It’s just fun to identify the songs.
I haven’t heard of that app but will have to download it and keep it on my phone when I go out exploring… I’ve learned over the years to identify the birds I photograph, mostly by sight though. One of my friends can hear a bird before she sees it and know what it is. Always amazes me!
That’s amazing, that an app can hear the birdsong near you and ID the birds. Who knew there was such a thing? Not me.
It is pretty neat and as far as I can tell — accurate. It is fun to listen.
I LOVE the Merlin app! I’ve learned sooo much about different bird songs since I got it. And I’ve found lots of birds I didn’t know anything about. Before, if they didn’t come to the feeder I knew nothing about them. Now can often find some bird I’ve never seen before once I hear them singing and Merlin shows me what they look like.
It is such a great app — I have had it along time but kind of forgot about using it.
Yes, a great app!
