Be Like the Birds, Not Like the Deer

2 Comments/ 131/ 0

I have often shared stories on the blog about living in the woods. It is a lovely place to live. But like any environment– there can be things that are frustrating.

One of the things I love to do is watch the birds. I have one feeder I bring in and out that hangs off our back deck. It is a nice feeder that feeds all kinds of birds. When we sit on the deck we have often commented how nice the birds behave. There are 4 perches and they take turns. It is pretty amazing. Either they wait on the deck wires or on the rain chains.

I wage on ongoing battle with the deer. I have had some pretty good results with plants and flowers in my front flower beds the past couple of years. I have always wanted to have flowers to cut to make bouquets and I have been able to do that because I have been diligent in planting plants that the deer usually leave alone and I spray deterrent on them. However – when it rains at night and washes that spray off – that is a recipe for disaster and that is what happened this week.

Did you hear me scream? My brand new knock out rose in honor of our new granddaughter. In the ground ONE DAY.

Nibbled down to a nub. And don’t get me started on the other grass like plants that yield pretty blue flowers….

Even the geranium I had repotted and sprayed generously….

It leaves me wishing the deer were as respectful as the birds but that’s not going to happen. The fawns are starting to appear and all the mamas are hungry. But doggone it –there is a whole forest of food — go eat that!
