Five Random Things

28 Comments/ 3592/ 2

Sometimes I just don’t really have my act pulled together enough to write a coherent blog post. Today is one of those days.  Perhaps the unpacking has finally gotten the better of me.  So instead of trying to come up with something amazing for you to read I thought I would jump on the Five Random Things bandwagon today.  So fasten your seatbelts and get ready.

  1. The new community we live in does not have garbage collection service.  I know!  It’s weird.  But if you saw some of the roads here you would understand.  I successfully took my two garbage bags tagged with the lovely orange sticker to the garbage and recycling place.  It is an experience.  You heave your tagged bags  (tags cost $1.50) over the mountain edge into a dumpster/trailer below.  They have different bins set up for the recycling and I was savvy enough to have mine all separated out ahead of time so I wasn’t clogging things up.  The set up there works but it is interesting.  Two lines of cars can come in with probably a total of 6 cars fitting.  But you have people running back and forth to the different areas to put their items in the different receptacles so it does not mean you get in and out quickly.  Everyone is very nice and the attendant even grabbed my bag for me and tossed it.  Maybe I looked weak.recycling
  2. Our oldest, Micah, officially started work this week at McKinsey in New York.  He has had a good summer after graduation from grad school  and I think he is ready to get back into the working world and we are excited for what is ahead for him.
  3. When Aaron had the cats he got a new electric self cleaning litterbox for them.  YES!  I was not convinced when he told me about it but it is pretty sweet.  Of course it costs more to use it than a conventional litter box but I am thinking it might be worth it.  It scoops itself.  It monitors their use and I now know that the cats have used the litter box 26 times since they came to our house.  I might have to do a video.  It is actually pretty amazing.  litterbox
  4. We need a sign for our house.  No one can find us.   Our driveway is very steep with 2 other driveways off of it.   You have to see it to understand.  We have missed deliveries and repairmen because they could not find us.  Or they end up in the wrong driveway.  We are taking ideas for names for our place.  We have a beach house name but this is not a beach house.  Got any ideas?
  5. When we lived in Australia I forwarded my US cell phone number to my Australian cell phone number.  My US friends could still call me on my regular phone.  We live in a “dip” and AT&T does not cover our “dip”.  We are  stuck in the contract mode for awhile.  It has been driving me nuts.  When I drive out of the development a mile down the road I have service.  I had been forwarding the number to my Skype number and it has not worked at all.  Today I finally figured out that I could forward it to our landline at the house and now I can get my cell phone calls again at home.  Yay!  I can’t get texts but I can still do iMessages and Facebook Messenger on my phone.  It isn’t perfect but at least I have an option that works now.  I just have to remember to forward the number before I get back to the house and unforward it when I leave.
  6. I couldn’t leave it at 5, could I?  I got two fabulous surprises in the mail yesterday. The first from my friend Mary of Natural Plus Nursery.  She sent me a housewarming gift that was perfect, don’t you think?   giftThe second came from Josh and Nichole Steiner of Pot and Panhandler.  I “met” them through JeniEats and as fellow North Carolinians they felt we needed this fabulous book.  I agree.  I can’t wait to explore.  book
  7. Oh and one more!  I got my library card!!!! library

Okay. Nameplate for the driveway or house name. Hmmm… Use the word, “Chill or Chillin'” in it. I’ll get my cup of Chai and have some fun with this as I make make another batch of shower gel this morning.

Oh that is a good idea….keep working on it, please! We get called the The Chilies all the time so it might be a good fit!!! Shower gel? My ears perked up on that one. I just finished up my container of Myan Mystery Body Lotion yesterday and thought of you. Good thing I still have some of the lovely lemon type left. I gave much of it away so I will be ordering again soon!

Welcome to RF5! Love that you figured out a solution to your cell phone issue. Does Verizon cover your area? We’ve had them for yours, and where we are, they have the best coverage of any of the phone providers. Sounds like your recyling/trash collection area is an interesting place! Glad everyone is nice, though; that helps a lot.

Thanks, Dianna! I couldn’t stick to 5. 🙂 Chris did get a Verizon phone as well and it works fairly well at the house so that will probably be what I do later on but we are in that “contract” phase right now and I hate to have to pay more to get out of it. I think this will work but I just have to remember to use the house phone to call out which is the hard thing because you know how you just click on a number in your cell phone so easily, right? Plus now we have to have long distance on the land line so ……we will figure it out but it was one of those things I should have expected. Frustrating but not the end of the world. I just have to go a mile down the road. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Have you been in to Verizon to ask if they do a contract buy-out??? Many other cell companies do it…to get Verizon customers!!!!!!! We’ve had Verizon for years also. Mostly ‘cuz they cover everywhere!!!!!!!!!!………except INside our home!!! Yup……I have to stand near a window that’s in line with a tower (5 miles away!). Moral of this tale: Steel siding and roof does NOT along cell signals to penetrate!!!! LOL! (Even living on a ridge top!!!!!) Hugs……..

Having been in the mountains of NC a few times, I totally understand your situation! I’m not too creative when it comes to naming but I do like the idea from the first comment about incorporating your last name into it with ‘chillin.’ Glad you found a solution to your phone problem! Sounds like you’re settling in nicely.

What a cool week and Mary and Josh are so thoughtful. Hooray for our new library cards. I will never complain about trash again! It was like that in Fargo, too-not the whole throwing it off a mountain, but having to take recycling somewhere.

We have a similar garbage situation here. I find it funny to watch people drive up, pull out plastic, throw it in the bin, jump back in the car and drive 10 (easily walk-able) feet to recycle cardboard. Repeat. Repeat. Same, same the phone situation we were fortunate that we weren’t locked in a contract so we just jumped ship to verizon. Glad ya’ like the book, hopefully you’ll get to try some o’ those diners and or dives. Oh yeah and I like “Casa de Chiles”. Happy Weekend!

I am having my first lazy day at home alone, with kids all back in school, and random fits the bill for me too!! I wonder if everyone here had to take their own garbage to the dump, would they create less garbage? hhhmmm, interesting thought.

I like the sound of “Chiles Chill Inn” – but it might seem like you were a Bed and Breakfast place, and then you would have LOTS of visitors finding you! LOL
    Maybe just “Chiles-End” is simpler.

Moving does offer challenges, even within your own country. No one can find us either but that is a common problem in Spain from what I understand. Most people give out addresses like this, “Turn left at the roundabout, then right at the supermarket and our house is three doors down from the blue garbage bins.” Street names and house numbers don´t seem to work. I love the new litter box and would like to learn more. How about Chill with the Chiles or The Chill Chateau or my favourite: Casa Chiles

We are still working on it—It might have “smiles” in it. And Chris said no to the Jeni and Donna’s Parents Place. Sorry. Too many words maybe????

I’m trying to come up with a clever name, but haven’t yet. Something with “park” in it since you feel like you are living in a park.
