Happy National Umbrella Day

8 Comments/ 121/ 1

You know I love to celebrate the special days of the month and today is none other than National Umbrella Day. I would have thought it would have been celebrated in April due to the whole April showers idea but nope- it is today, February 10th.

So why do we celebrate umbrella day? Just think about where we would be without umbrellas.

Wet. Very wet.

Umbrellas are great for keeping rain off of us and also great at keeping the sun at bay at the beach. No one wants to get a nasty burn because they spent time in the sun when they could have had the help of an umbrella.

I found out a few things about the umbrella from the Days of the Year website. The Gaelic word scath fearthainne is the word for umbrella. Don’t ask me to pronounce it because I can’t. It actually means rain shadow. How neat is that?

I have a lot of umbrellas. I have a llama umbrella but my favorite is my smiley face umbrella.

Umbrellas are one of those things that you often wish you had when a surprise storm pops up. I always have one in my car but I don’t always carry it with me when I am out and about and sometimes get caught with a pop up shower and a useless umbrella in the car situation. Ah well. —good thing I won’t melt, right?

So today let’s be thankful for umbrellas and make sure we all have back up umbrellas where we need them. I found this fun video of scenes that depict Dancing in the Rain which seems very appropriate today. Take a watch and leave me a message and tell me what your favorite scene or memory of an umbrella is. No umbrellas required for this one. We seldom need an umbrella here in Spain, but keep one in the car. Typically we aren´t near the car when a sudden rain shower happens. Growing up om the prairies we didn´t use umbrellas as it seldom rained but when we moved to Vancouver, I had one with me all the time. One day, I wondered why everyone had black and white polka dotted unmbrellas, until I realized it was snowing! I had never seen folks using umbrellas to ward off the snow before!! (The snow in Vancouver is rare and very wet)

I have a few umbrellas in my car and often find myself in the same situation as you – stuck somewhere without an umbrella. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I love your smiley face umbrella – it’s brings a little sunshine on those grey days.

Not an umbrella fan! They are drippy and messy. A hooded jacket.coat is for me!

I keep umbrellas in the car. Funny thing is when we lived in rainy Portland, Oregon, I didn’t use an umbrella at all. Of course, we didn’t have downpours and thunderstorms either, just misty and light rain most of the time.

There’s a photo of my mom taking a photo of Caleb and my niece Whitney standing under a floral umbrella. I don’t think it was raining, but. That’s my favorite umbrella memory. If you were to ask me where I have an umbrella, I couldn’t tell you.

I have a few umbrellas also. They do come in handle, but they are hard to keep up with somethings. Enjoyed the video. I would pick date night and Dancing in the Rain…

Rain in almost-flat Maryland blows under the umbrella, from each direction. Why do we carry umbrellas? To stop people trying to sell us more umbrellas. They don’t keep the rain off but they do keep the vendors at bay! 🙂
