I KNEW I Would Love It — An Extraordinary Book Sale

21 Comments/ 90/ 1

The local chapter of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) has a yearly event in Brevard that I knew I had to support.  I missed it last year and vowed to not allow that to happen again.  If you are near to Brevard, North Carolina you still have a chance to take advantage of this tremendous sale today, Thursday, June 22nd from 10 am until 5 pm.

My advice?

Run.  Don’t walk.  Today is Fill a Box for $5.  YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!

You might be able to catch  my excitement from my capitalization, bold and exclamation mark but if you have any doubts this sale is amazing.

I made my foray to Boshamer Gym at Brevard College on Tuesday which was 25% off day.  It was the first day I could make it and even though the sale started on Saturday there were plenty of books left for me to peruse.

So I did just that.

The group estimates that they put out about 30,000 books that have been collected since last year’s book sale.  Yellow boxes can be found all over the county where folks are encouraged to drop off donations all year to help stock the tables during the annual 6 day book sale.

Organization is the key to a successful anything and this sale was probably the best organized that I have seen.  The gym floor is covered with tarps and then tables are set up to accommodate the many varieties of books.  Each book is priced individually with a penciled in price the inside the cover.

Friendly volunteers man all the tables and help keep their areas clean and well stocked.  When I arrived I was greeted warmly by these lovely ladies who told me all about the sale.

I went with the intent of finding books for my Little Free Library.  The ones that seem to be getting the most attention currently are my non fiction titles so I was in search of gardening, outdoor landscaping, holistic and health books as well as cookbooks.  I found a few children’s books to add to my supply as well.

I did not even venture to the fiction area.  I do know how to practice some self control.

I did find some vintage books that I bought for my own personal library.

A nice selection of large print books caught my eye and I found several that my mom will enjoy.

Beautiful coffee table books lined the bleachers.

There were many vintage books as well as First Editions, Signed books, and Advance Reader Copies all clearly marked and available for the discerning shopper.

How about this set of beautiful Time Life books for only $3 each?

The AAUW Book Sale funds scholarships for local girls and I cannot imagine a better way to support scholarships.  I cannot begin to imagine the number of hours that go into this sale both months before and after the actual sale when leftover books are boxed up.

I came away with 2 boxes that contained 41 books for around $60.

Where will you find me today?

If you guessed the AAUW Book Sale for $5 a box day you guessed correctly.

I know! I could have spent hours there but my arms got tired. 🙂 They were very accommodating to have a “hold” area for large purchasers like me so I made several trips there.

I was wondering how long you were there- hours? Thanks for including the directory of the sale. Interesting that there wasn’t a table for Romance which I believe is by far the largest genre in popularity today. Well done AAUW. Oh and Inalso love how you are curating your Little Library

I missed that there was not a table for Romance. Hmm. I will have to look at the flip side of that paper because it broke it down even more and I am sure romance showed up under that. But that means a walk upstairs to my office and I am still lazily lounging in bed with cats and hubby and laptop and coffee. 🙂 I will get back to you on that later. Thanks for stopping by , real friend. 🙂

In the form of a question please. Thanks for checking! I think I’m onto a sociological study. Or maybe I just want ice cream.

Looks like you had fun! See those 2 blue “Day in the Life of America” books in one of your pictures? Those books (along with all the other “Day in the Life” books) were the brainchild and baby of Rick Smolan, who is my former boss’ brother, a well-known photographer and an unbelievably nice person! Google him! And my former company, Carbone Smolan Agency, designed and photo-edited all the “Day in the Life” books! Six degrees of separation….

I was really tempted by some of those coffee table books and the Day in the Life books were amazing. Love that you picked up on that but then of course you would since you worked for the company that did the design and editing.

Wow, 30,000 books! A bibliophile’s dream! What a tremendous amount of work goes into that sale too, I would think, since it’s so organized. You got some great finds; let us know how the $5/box went.

What an incredible sale from the organization to the volume of wonderful books. I would be just like you, giddy with joy.

I am seriously jealous of your finding those vintage Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twins books.

I went back today for $5 a box and came out with 30 books stashed in one box. Amazing way to build up my Little Free Library and enjoy supporting scholarships as well!

Great deals! I would totally do this for my Little Free Library too. I always keep a stash of extra books so the library stays filled. I also have different season/holiday books too. But I’m always amazed with how much the library turns over. The titles are always changing and being swapped with something completely different.

Isn’t it wonderful ? I started out keeping a log of all the books I received and put in it but I have had so much turn over that I have abandoned that practice. 🙂 It seemed like too much work. I do send thank you notes to those that gift me books but that is about as much as I can do these days.

I love these book sales. It is very similar to the one held each year in the community I lived in, in Canada. I stocked up every year, usually went with a girlfriend. Then when we moved overseas I donated 6 large boxes full of books for the sale.
