Man Down!!!!

It was a very sad day in my household today.  There is a soldier down in my yard.  And by soldier I mean my Wild Bill’s Squirrel Zapping birdfeeder.  If you missed the original post when I shared with great joy my new wonderful technological advance in combat—er—feeding birds click right here and you can read and see pictures of it in all the glory that it had.     I will wait right here for you to come back.

I woke up to see the devastation. The destruction.  The sadness of it all washed over me.

The culprit?   My beloved deer.  Sigh.  I love them but somehow they managed to defile the one feeder that was fairly deer and squirrel proof.  To the point that this feeder is now out of commission for the rest of the winter and most likely the rest of life.   The design is a bit flawed as the pole adapter is a plastic piece that just can not hold the weight and most likely the raging winds that we have here in Iowa.

Of course I still have feeders but none as grandiose as this one.  It makes me very sad.  I sat it up the night of the demise as the wires were still connected that Chris installed to stabilize it and I did not have any wire cutters with me to take them off.  That night we had 7 deer who feasted on the remnants, knocking it around the area as much as the wires would allow until it was empty.  I imagine they might have a tummy ache today.  And as much as I love them I am thinking it might be justified.

Deer–they always look so innocent though. It’s their eyes–full of innocence and a sweetness.

I do love them but they are destructive. Back to the drawing board.

You had 7 deer in your yard… wow! Ok, I understand your anger at them, but what a beautiful sight that must have been!

Yep! They are very tame and know I am an easy mark. What can I say?

Oh, Beth. They have to eat, too. It is hard to find food, especially in the Winter. They can’t help themselves. They are hungry. They didn’t mean to break it.

I don’t hold it against them. I love the deer but thought at least this feeder was safe!

I am always on the hunt for a squirrel proof feeder. I finally gave up and put seeds in my birdbath and a seed block out to keep them off the feeders. We live-caught about 8 gray this fall and 1 red and transported them to new homes, but when I had one in the trap and 2 free out feeding on my seed I gave up. Somewhere out there is the perfect feeder!

This one was actually pretty good as long as the battery was not dead. The design is just almost too heavy when filled to mount on the plastic adapter. Give high winds or deer.. Feeder down!

    Naughty deer.

The zinger ending to your story was perfect. I loved it. Now if only deer could read.

I am so sorry your feeder has been damaged. Sometimes no matter how much we try, we cannot get things to work. I am afraid that squirrels and deer are too smart.

I’m sorry your feeder was wounded in battle. I had a hummingbird feeder that saw it’s last day when hit by a snowball during a snowball fight. It’s rare we get snow here so it’s game on when it does and all is fair in a snowball battle.

Wow. Guess those deer wanted in on the action. At least the birdies have others to go to.

I’m thankful we don’t have deer in our area, the squirrels are enough to keep up with. Sorry to see your feeder on the ground, that’s just not right!

Aw, that is sad. Perhaps Christ could get another one like it and attach it right to the tree high up?

We are thinking about options at this time. IF we do hang it from a tree it will have to be a reallllllyyyyy sturdy tree and then refilling it becomes a major issue. I am thinking it needs to be mounted on more of a tray type deal on a fencepost or something. But with frozen ground and snow that is not going to happen anytime soon!
