Every once in awhile there are things that make me pause and go “hmmm”. Chris and I had a wonderful anniversary weekend away in Abingdon, VA. We have driven by it many times, heard of its charming downtown and decided that this was going to be our destination. No massive trip for our anniversary this year – Scotland was our big trip this year. A mere 2 1/2 to 3 hours away – it was the perfect trip and despite the heat wave that is still everywhere, we had a great time.

A few things did make me stop and go “hmm” on the weekend. It seems like the town has an unwritten policy to drive in the left lane and pass on the right. I noticed this every time we drove back out of the downtown to our hotel. In town the lanes suddenly have turn lanes that pop up with little notice so Chris was on his toes but as we drove out of town there was a definite trend to drive in the left lane with passing on the right. No reason could be seen other than perhaps folks didn’t want to get stuck in a lane that may eventually turn into a turn lane? I don’t know. It was noticeable. Weird.

The hotel we stayed at had one of those breakfast buffets and one morning we got a little bit. There was a sign on the toaster stating simply – “please do not place buttered toast in the toaster”. I kind of laughed and as an attendant straightened up around me I commented on it and commented that there had to be a reason that was there. She nodded and explained that it happens more often than you would imagine – hence the sign. Smoke billows out and smoke alarms go off. Now I have never ever thought of placing buttered toast in a toaster but I guess it is a thing.
Finally, Chris and I were in a visitor’s center getting some information on the Virginia Creeper Trail and were chatting with the employees a bit. Somehow Chris made mention of driving for 50. years and I quickly responded that “I” hadn’t been driving that long. He looked at me and I realized that yes indeed, I HAVE been driving that long. Whew. Talk about a reality check! I am older than I think I am. Silly thing but it threw me for a loop for sure. Wow. Where has time gone?
Hope your Monday is a fun day and that you have a couple of “Hmmm” moments to make you think about things in a different way.
