Musings from Marco Island, Florida

19 Comments/ 81/ 0

Our extended time in Florida has come at a good time with all of the cold weather that seems to be invading all areas of the United States.  It is plenty cold here, though, and our beach time has been limited a little bit but still enjoyable. More of a walking the beach trip this week than lounging on the beach type of trip.

While I have been here there have been a few interesting things and observations that I feel led to pass on to my devoted readers.

  1. There are more old people driving here than in Brevard, NC.  Many more.
  2. I can unintentionally get  old men in trouble.  An older gentleman started talking to me in the grocery store and he got the stink eye and a tongue lashing from his wife for it.  Yikes.
  3. When you stay in huge condo towers they all kind of start looking alike.  One night a family knocked on our door thinking that the condo we were in (203) was where they were renting.  Nope.  We are in Tower 4.  They were in Tower 3.  So back they went down the elevator and outside with their hugely overloaded luggage cart.
  4. Restaurants are super busy here during Christmas and post New Year’s.  Expect to wait if you go to some of the more popular touristy places.  We found a couple off the beaten path places that were excellent and easily accessible. Our favorite for a fabulous dinner meal was Cafe de Marco and for breakfast/lunch was Petit Soleil.

    4 quarter pound grilled prawns–yummy!

    Chris’s seafood dinner was massive.

  5. I can NOT leave lending libraries alone.  The one in the condo building was a massive mess so I took it upon myself to straighten it up a bit.  Hopefully the Reading Steward does not mind.  I found a book in German and one in French along with about 5 dictionaries so if you are need of those I can point you in the right direction.

    After

  6. Post hurricane stays are VERY noisy.  This has not been a quiet place at all.  There are workmen everywhere and saws, drills,  jackhammers, you name it going all day long.  Note to self : avoid hurricane affected areas if a quiet stay is required.
  7. Sunsets and sunrises are better viewed over a body of water.

You did a fantastic job with the library. I always enjoy a cocktail and watching the sunset on the West Coast of Florida. Jealous!

It has been far chillier than normal so there has not been as much beach time as I would have liked but this is a new week and it appears to be warming up a bit . We will see!

We thought about heading to Florida, but then decided to wait until they have a little more time to repair after the hurricanes. So this year, we’re headed to Phoenix! (We like to stay here for Christmas, then get the heck out of Dodge once we start getting sick of being cold!) Great work on that library! I’ll do the same if there is a library where we stay! ~ Lynn

We have been thinking that Arizona might be our place to go to next year as well. The hurricanes have really dinged things up but we had this booked back in July so just kept it. Plus Chris has work down here so it was a good home base while he goes on work visits. 🙂

Oh, that lending library would have driven me crazy! Orderly fashion please and you did a great job doing so. 🙂 Sounds like you’re having a nice trip even if the weather there isn’t ideal.

I figure it will be a wreck in a few days but at least I fixed it for a minute!

That lending library sure looks a lot better since you tidied it up. I’m sure it will be appreciated. Keep warm.

Well maybe. Or maybe they will say “don’t mess with our books!”. 🙂

Lots of Germans on the west-coast of Florida, tourists and snowbirds alike, so no surprise to me that you found a German book. More surprising that you didn’t find more. 🙂 I did enjoy the cold snap but am happy that temperatures are returning to a more normal. Of course, I can live without the rain.

Well isn’t that interesting? I have heard a lot of German being spoken so it makes more sense now. I just saw a news piece on how Russian women are coming to Florida to have babies. A totally different thing but it made me understand that Florida is more of a destination than I had imagined.

It has been a nice break since NC has been really cold while we have been gone. I am enjoying even the fog and cloudiness of today.

Nice post and I’m glad you enjoyed it, but I still wouldn’t want to live in Florida during the winter… or the summer for that matter. Eight years on the west coast (Sarasota, Tampa, and St. Pete) was quite enough. That was even back when it wasn’t as obscenely overcrowded as it is now.

Oh yes—it is super crowded at times and I can imagine the locals get tired of it just like we get a bit weary of the “leafers” that come through Brevard in the fall. But I do love the beach and Florida has a plethora of those so it is nice to visit.
