Stupid Covid 19 has wrecked my 60th birthday trip to Bermuda so today I decided to share one of my favorite places that we visited when we traveled there in 2014. We will reschedule our trip later but for now enjoy this little repost that shares one of my favorite places that we visited.
One of my favorite stops on our trip to Bermuda was to visit the quaint town of St. George’s. We had a lovely time strolling around the very quiet town on a warm and sunny day and were thrilled to be able to visit so many of the historic and beautiful places that were within walking distance. Since our visit was timed in the off season for the island we did not have to fight crowds of people and it really was the most wonderful way to visit the island.
Being part of a church family does not always work out exactly as planned as the parishioners of this particular congregation found out. The “story” of the unfinished church is a complicated one. Seems the congregation decided to build a replacement for St. Peter’s Church in 1874 but due to a series of events including disagreement among the church members (Imagine! Church members disagreeing!!!) and storm damage the building of the structure was halted and never completed.
What did happen was that the Bermuda National Trust stepped in and worked to stabilize the crumbling structure so that it has become a tourist stop and wonderful place to photograph an interesting architectural wonder. The ruins are just that–ruins—and the public is not allowed inside the actual church but there is plenty to view from the outside.
Someone obviously has a good sense of humor when it comes to naming streets in this town, don’t you think?
Now I bet you are all wondering about the existing St. Peter’s Church, aren’ t you? The picture above is a sneak preview —we did see it also and it was amazing.

Leave a commentSad that your trip had to be cancelled but you can always go later. I love the pictures of the unfinished church. WE visited a bombed out church in LIverpool which was never reconstructed but left as a reminder and memorial to all those who lost their lives in WWII. It was moving to visit.
The trip will be rescheduled later I am sure. It was going to be a family trip so that was the best part of having the boys and their wives with us but we will have a chance to do it later hopefully. That church in Liverpool must have been something to see —very sobering I would think.
We went on vacay to Bermuda decades ago and when I read the title of your post the first image that flashed into my mind is your last photo. That St. Peter’s Church was stunning to see in person. Thanks for sharing your memories here.
We spent a lot of time in St. Peter’s and it truly was an amazing place. The cemetery was pretty neat to walk through as well and I did several posts on both the church and the cemetery. It is amazing to be able to go back and relive through pictures so I am feeling pretty happy today. 🙂
My favorite place , too!
Covid-19 has ruined a lot of travel plans unfortunately for many of us. I’m sorry to hear it ruined your special birthday trip plans and I hope that very soon you can go end enjoy! I would love to walk around those church ruins and take lots of photos. So many interesting details.
Wow, beautiful! It’s a shame that they didn’t finish it
What a interesting story about the church. By the looks of your pictures if finished what a amazing building it would have been. So sorry you had to cancel your birthday plans but I know when you are able it will a amazing trip.
We have never been to Bermuda, only Haiti and that was not for vacation but work when we used to build low income bamboo houses and tried to help after the hurricane disaster. Bermuda looks interesting.
SO many people with trips and vacations cancelled due to Corona. Perhaps the best way to look at it is that the trip is just postponed rather than cancelled. How fortunate we are to even be looking forward to future travels… at such a challenging and heartbreaking for so many, time.

Covid-19 has wrecked a lot of things but like you said, travel plans can be changed. We’re wondering if we will be able to get our big family trip to the beach in this summer. We are renting a house big enough to accommodate all of our grown-up kids, spouses, and children. That remains to be seen. Enjoyed your photos.
