Yellow Gold

7 Comments/ 194/ 0

I really try to give everyone I encounter some grace. After all, we really have no idea what anyone else is going through at any moment of the day. I know that we ALL have things we are dealing with on a daily basis and those things just naturally seep into our daily interactions. With that being said, I do think that folks are just really super stressed out at times and don’t always treat others respectfully or even kindly. I try to respond to those people with kindness. It’s not always possible but I try.

This week I had a simple exchange that left me laughing and realizing that sometimes people have a reason for saying the things that they do and for reacting the way that they do. While it may appear to be odd to me, I am sure they have their reasons.

I went to the post office to get some yellow Hold Mail cards.

They used to keep them on the counter where you could just pick up a couple but now they appear to be under lock and key. I asked the postal worker for some when I dropped off a package and she gave me two. I then asked if I could have a few more (because I really don’t go to the post office that often and I like to have a few on hand) and the response was as follows.

“You aren’t using them for back to back holds, are you?”

To which I responded: “No, we travel a lot and I don’t come to the post office often when you are open so I like to have a few extras.”

She begrudgingly handed me one more.

I giggled as I walked out because it was just one of those situations that was out of the ordinary and made me think that these cards were gold.

Several people have suggested I just go online and do the hold but trust me….there is a whole other story about those experiences which is why I have gone to physical hold cards. I know our branch has had a very difficult time retaining workers and I understand that so I try to be understanding but I am not the only one locally who has had major issues.

So what do I do with my 3 yellow gold cards? I am going to hold tight to them and not waste them, you can be sure of that.

Yes- good post! Here’s our story- we do use the online hold, which (fingers crossed) has always worked. But…the last few trips they haven’t followed our request to hold the mail until we get home and can pick it up. They deliver it, which means they jam it all into our smallish apartment mailbox (which fortunately locks). 3-4 weeks of mail and important advertising flyers! Oh well. Good for you for your positive attitude!

Exactly our experience with the online which is what prompted the yellow gold card. We are not alone obviously!

Sometimes seemingly simply requests can end up with a frustrating situation. You handled it with grace.

My sister was just here from AL, for a little over 2 weeks. She wasn’t able to put a hold on her mail because she went to the post office a bit after 3 on a Saturday and apparently her Post Office closes prior to 3 on Saturdays. So she had a neighbor picking it up from her mailbox. We told her she could have gone online to stop it..she didn’t know that and wasn’t real comfortable with doing it online, but I’d have definitely done that. At our local post office it’s like they really want to not come in. Their hours are fewer and fewer. They are not very friendly and I don’t go there if I don’t have to.
