Comments for a Cause – Providing a Haven for the Homeless

11 Comments/ 93/ 1

Welcome to December, friends. If you are like me you are realizing that 2019 is going to be over in the blink of an eye. I can hardly believe that Christmas is so close. I am so not ready but hey – that’s okay. It isn’t about all of the “stuff” that we try to cram in during this season at all, is it? It is more about the real meaning of the season and I am going to take that to heart this year and not stress about all of the other stuff that comes along.

Our Comments for a Cause for November was Shadowbrook Farm located in Pisgah Forest just a little over 5 miles from our home. I have absolutely fallen in love with this animal sanctuary and the owners, Mary Ann and Bill. You can read all about their mission by clicking here.

Erin and Aaron loved brushing the animals when they came for Thanksgiving.

Thank you to all who have stopped by the blog and commented this month – it’s been a great month and Chris and I are happy to say that we delivered a check for $250 to Shadowbrook Farm as a result of your comments. If you are interested in making your own donation you can always do that on your own by stopping by and placing it in the donation box or mailing it to 895 Wilson Rd. Pisgah Forest, North Carolina 28768. Of course they always love fruit and vegetable scraps and I pop down once a week at least to share those with the animals now.

The weather in North Carolina is pretty mild but there are still nights when it is chilly. Our area is like it is everywhere with homelessness being an issue. It saddens my heart when I realize that there are so many people who do not have appropriate housing. Fortunately in Transylvania County we have a lot of resources that people can use and one of these is The Haven of Transylvania County. The Haven is an 18 bed overnight shelter that serves as a temporary shelter for homeless men and women in our area. As with any shelter there is never enough room but this is one place that is doing a great job of providing not only a place to sleep but a safe and secure environment with laundry facilities, showers, mail service and telephone messaging services as well. The staff is trained to help those who come into their doors and they are making a difference in our community.

This month I thought it would be a great way to support those in the need in the area by making The Haven our Comments for a Cause recipient. For each comment made on any post during the month Chris and I will make a 50 cent donation to The Haven. Please feel free to check out their website and social media pages by clicking below. Together we can make a difference. Thank you to my faithful readers for your continued support for my Comments for a Cause efforts.

So pleased we all helped make a good donation to the farm. What you do here on your blog is so awesome. You are right, lets just savour the season and not make ourselves crazy. I have calmed/paired down my Christmases tremendously the last few years and it feels good. xo

Yes—I have really cut back this year especially and I think it is the right decision. No one really knows how much you celebrate the season and what I am choosing to do is what is going to matter to me so that is my motto this year. Do less and enjoy more. Thanks for your support of Comments for a Cause!

Shadowbrook Farm looks like a fun place. So glad you were able to make a donation to their cause.
Yes, it’s sad that homelessness is such an issue everywhere. I’m sure The Haven is a Godsend for many.

Shadowbrook Farm is the best. I love being able to pop in anytime to see the animals and they all love to be brushed. Well, maybe not the chickens. 🙂 Homelessness is so heartbreaking. We have a huge population in our area that live in the forests and that breaks my heart as well. It is just hard to imagine not having a place to call home.

One of the things I love about NC are the many farms, some of them rescue, some of them working but all pretty much open to the public. I love that you go so frequently and drop of food scraps.
I hope we can help raise just as much for this month’s cause. It’s good to think of our fellow man during this crazy holiday time.

What a wonderful amount to give to the Shadowbrook Farms!! I am glad you give me a chance to help these wonderful charities. As you can guess we also have a large homeless population In Virginia Beach. We give as much as we can and this will give us another chance. Thank you, Beth Ann. Also we have also cut way back on the material side of Christmas and more on the true meaning.
