Dubrovnik – Game of Thrones Tour and More

12 Comments/ 92/ 0

Our summer time trip to Croatia was an experience that I keep trying to relive.  Not the heat part because it was sweltering much of the time.   We have found that the air conditioning in Europe is definitely not the air conditioning that we have come accustomed to in our little United States environments.

In other words— I am a wimp.  One of the funniest things in the Villa Sherherazade  was that there was one little room off the dining room and kitchen that was called “The Cold Room” by our butler.  It was the coolest room in the entire place and we tried to see how many people we could cram into it several times.  You probably had to have been there but we still talk about Daniel and how he said “cold room”.

One of the best things about Dubrovnik was the oldness and the beauty of the buildings.  The Old Town is just that.  Old.  Full of history and beauty.   The walls that surround Dubrovnik are a huge draw for tourists to “walk the walls” which are approximately 1.2 miles.  The walls themselves are 13-20 feet thick in some areas and feature turrets and towers in their design as a source of protection for the ancient city.  The walls are featured prominently in The Game of Thrones HBO series.

One of the gates that you can go through to get into Old Town and is featured in many tourist pictures.

The first night we were in Dubrovnik we actually took a Game of Thrones tour and many of these pictures are from that very tour. Of course I thought I took more and better pictures but that was not the case.  I think I might have been a bit distracted.

This scenery should look familiar to GOT fans.

But still,  if you are a GOT fan you might recognize some of the places in these pictures.   Our tour guide was actually an extra in the series and she was really knowledgeable about the history as well as about the filming of the series.  I would highly recommend taking one of these tours even if you are not a GOT fan because there is just so much history that is shared.

Our tour guide in the pink dress led us through the busy streets and gave us a great overview of the history of Dubrovnik.

I think you would have to agree that the city is beautiful.  My pictures captured just a fraction of the beauty.

These steps play a prominent role in GOT. Of course there was no way to get a picture without people in it.

A few pictures our youngest son’s fiancee, Erin,  shared with me when they “walked the walls” are simply stunning, don’t you think?

A short walk from our hotel to Old Town we viewed this beautiful view.  Every time we walked into town we saw this and it was probably the best walk of the trip.

Just looking at a few of these pictures brings it all back.  Isn’t that the wonderful thing about pictures?  They have the ability to transport us back to a time in the past that holds special memories.

Today I am feeling blessed as I look at these and promise to sort through my hundreds of digital images to bring you more.  Perhaps it is more for me than for my readers but in any case I will share.

Thanks for stopping by today.  Please feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you think about this and if you are a Game of Thrones fan.  All comments this month go to support our Comments for a Cause – The Bookworm Box.

I love that one photo where you see the castle one the hill and what looks like a couple escape tunnels down to the sea. Did you go in there? (Including the very top photo, it’s the 5th one down.)

No we did not go in there. The tour was pretty limited and we just did not have a lot of free time to go back and do things later because there were so many wedding activities that we wanted to be a part of. But it was a really great overview and the buildings are simply amazing. Very film worthy!

I’m not familiar with Game of Thrones other than having heard of it. But that’s OK. I still enjoyed this tour of this amazing stone work. Just think of all the time and labor invested.

It’s an HBO show that has a hugely loyal following. It is pretty violent and I have watched probably 1/3 of the episodes so I know a teeny bit but not enough to be called a fan probably. It is simply amazing what the buildings were like. So much history!

Well, I’m not a GOT fan, but I still enjoyed every one of your photos.

Oh good. I am glad. I am not a GOT fan either but the rest of the family is. I have watched some but not all of the series so I know a little bit but not enough to be knowledgeable. 🙂

Seriously cool! What a beautiful city. Hahaha European air conditioning. It’s the same with European showers, definitely not the same as the showers we’re used to in the states!

AH yes! The showers. And the lack of washcloths. I packed my own. But there are definitely other charms to enjoy. I am just a pampered American. 🙂

I just love all of these pictures. What a great idea to go on a Game of Thrones tour. Dubrovnik is on my places I want to visit list. So much history. It is true the A/C here in Europe is not the same as in North America and neither is the heating. You just get used to it. I love the idea of a cold room! My favourite picture is the one with the three bells. But they are all fabulous.

The “cold room” was not all that cold but it was a lot better than the rest of the place. And now we have a fun term to say all the time with the family. 🙂 You would love a trip there—hope you make it!

Beautiful, stunning scenery! And yes, air conditioning in Europe is definitely not what we are used to. 🙂

I guess we have not been in Europe when it was so hot before and I REALLY noticed the difference. I am a wimp.
